Many folks don’t understand just how much work goes into preparing wood. Just chainsaw maintenance, sharpening, mixing fuel, etc. takes a lot of time. Great job on all Stephen: shooting, editing, describing, ...all of it! You’re my go-to guy for turning videos. 👍

I split them down the pith. Granted it was on littler logs. But I could see the pith through both halves, it was right on the surface of both. It looked like a long skinny caterpillar. The wood never split anymore after that either and was easier than sawing too.

Great insight, I lost my maple tree in my back yard but not all was lost. I was able to save a lot for blanks

I enjoyed the video. I only wish I could bend down like you did to cut the logs! At 73, that's not so easy! LOL I try to lift my logs onto sawbucks instead. Also not so easy!!! Look forward to your next videos. Have a safe and happy Christmas.

I think your saw needs the air/fuel mix screws adjusted it’s super easy and would give you a lot more top end power

You ain't lying about cherry. I had several 6" diameter logs I was going to make vases out of. Very wet but I sealed them like you do. Suckers cracked from the pith to the edge of the log. Still have them, don't know what I am going to do with them (bone dry now). May try something that I can drill holes and stitch.

Thank you James. I have always had mixed results with Cherry. This method seems to work well most of the time but Cherry also seems to have a mind of it's own. I would like to see what you decide to do with those pieces. Take care brother and thanks again.

Great videoYes there is a lot of work in wood turning. Looking forward to your end grain bowl. I must agree with cmts on top end rpms on your saw. I know it must be working much better than before but is missing the high pitch max power range. Great start to finish demo keep on turning!

Thanks for sharing. It is indeed a lot of work prepping for turning. For the hobbyist, to price the bowls to include all the effort and time no one would buy them.

Thank you very much and you are so right. It is really hard to get your time from these projects unless you are almost strictly doing production works. I do very little in production but in order to get anything back, sometimes you need to just bite the bullet and get it done. That way you can get back to the hobby that you enjoy. At least that is what I do. I allow my Pens, Bottle Stoppers and Mugs to bring in money for the shop. Most bowls, vases and specialty projects will not make much money when you include your time and effort, but that is what most people enjoy turning the most. Thank you and take care.

Thank you Greg. I will probably not be cutting these into round blanks just yet and some will become spindle blanks also. Most of my blanks are cut from these slabs when I start a project. Oh man. Here’s some news for ya. We’ve talked before. So, after 2 yrs of waiting to upgrade my lathe they sold the last one the day before I was going to order it, on Black Friday. You know it, the Laguna 18/36. Love watching just another video.

On my property I've got a ton of what we call " choke cherry" . One tree has got to come down ,but has a nice Burl in it. When I cut it down, how do I best go about saving that Burl from checking? I'd say it is about 12 to 14 inches ( bark included) in diameter, and is growing both sides of tree.

Thanks for this info I'm new to the turning so this helps. After you sawed them in half is it necessary to seal the exposed wood in the center as well or just the ends. I also do not have a lot of room in my shed to store it do you think it would be good to seal the wood then store under a tarp or would that trap to much moisture

Thank you Evin and welcome to the woodturning community. I only seal the ends because I will be coming back to it soon. If the tarp is over the wood and not laying on top of it, I don't see any problem with using the tarp. It needs airflow to combat mold also. I hope this helps. Take care.

Thank you Chris. I always use either old candles or Gulf wax found in the grocery store. It is all just paraffin wax. I hope this helps. Take care.

Beautiful job cutting that incredible wood. You don't seem to have any problem cutting straight with your chainsaw. I am a rookie and can't cut straight if my life depended on it. Any advice on how to cut straight?

Thank you Brad. First of all your chain must be sharp and symmetrical on both sides and have the correct tension. I always cut straight down from my marks. Do not push down on the saw, just let it eat at its own pace and then just practice keeping it straight. You got this. Hope this helps.
