They were not "hostile settlers"... Ezra 4:2 they approached Zerubbabel and the heads of fathers ' houses and said to them, "Let us build with you, for we worship your God as you do, and we have been sacrificing to him ever since the days of Esarhaddon king of Assyria who brought us here." They may not have been Jews but they should be been welcomed because they worshiped the same God, the same way.

I do not agree with the "Remnants jumped in to help" they were hostile settlers, Samaritans, according to other studies. The Bible calls them the adversaries. Ezra 4:1 Now when the adversaries of Judah and Benjamin heard that the children of the captivity builded the temple unto the Lord God of Israel;
