This baithak is priceless. I'm watching this for the nth time. When one sees this, they wil realize what a genius has left us just a few days ago. India is a poorer country with his death, and Hindustani Classical Music has lost one more of its titans! Allah unhein Jannat bakshe.

I was so fortunate to meet Khansahab once at his US concert at the Sangati Center in San Francisco in 2010. On that occasion he graciously obliged my humble farmaish and sang a vilambit khyal in Purvi ‘Mero dukh door kiya Nizamuddin Auliya’ which is still ringing in my ears. The vibrancy of his personality and the jaw-dropping, awe-inspiring depth of his knowledge - both of which come across so sparklingly in this baithak - left a lasting impression. Although I didn’t know him personally I felt a deep sense of loss when I learned (on this comments page) of his passing in 2020. He was a true treasure - I feel like one could learn more about the culture and heritage of old Delhi by spending an afternoon in Ustad’s service than by visiting all the museums and archeological sites in NCR. Deeply grateful to Pt. Parikhji and team for preserving this fragment of his wealth that is itself of inestimable value to music students and listeners. Khuda unko jannat naseeb karein - Ameen.

Before even listening to this, one should listen to baithak of other greats like Shruti ji or Uday ji or Ashwini ji or Vidyadhar ji to understand the depth of "Indian music". Over romanticism and fallacy of Khusro is not on which Indian music has survived or grown. Once all historic references are destroyed, one can get mesmerized in any number of "tarikh" and "stories"...

Amir Khusrau, like so many other Sufi saints, was an out and out Jihadi. There is lot of evidence out there for those who want to seek out the truth. His gleeful celebration of the demolition of Somnath, and contemporaneous temple breaking campaigns of the barbaric Khilji Turks is on record. I will share just one here as sample: "The whole country, by means of the sword of our holy warriors, has become like a forest denuded of its thorns by fire. The land has been saturated with the water of the sword, and the vapours of infidelity have been dispersed. The strong men of India have been trodden under foot, and all are ready to pay tribute. Islam is triumphant, idolatry is subdued. Had not the law granted exemption from death by payment of poll-tax the very name of Hind, root and branch, would have extinguished. [Amir Khusrau, Mathnawiyy-i-Dawal ani Khizir Khan, Rashid Ahmad Salim Ansari, ed., Aligarh, 1917, P. 46]"

It takes more than the world theories of all those activists and communists, to understand music and what exactly he is trying to convey. Feeling fear is a very personal thing, that you decide how you want to fight. But understanding somebody with your point of view and then giving him/her some "banner" that suits and contents your sense of knowledge is definitely a work of some weakling. World is a beautiful place when we focus on its beauty, and not on all its shortcomings... Having met this personality several times (by the grace of God), this world needs more people like him... As many as possible... And not some jerks to shower their opinions without knowing the 'o' of it.. May God give such people some brains... 🙏

I wish I could think of something positive to say about all those mentioned by him other than the fact that they pretty much hated hindus and hinduism ie the core mindset of this nation. Unfortunately a lot of these tales are romanticized notions are based on nothing short of fiction. Sufis were never friends of hindus, if they were they would never have converted them. the relationship of islam to music is plainly seen in how often sufis are invited to sing qwallis in mosques! a quick google search on music in islam divulges much. amir khusru is much eulogised and held up as the innovator of some form of composite culture his comments on shiva lingas ought not be forgotten. Hindus do not need lessons on composite culture. Today's islamic world is still at war with such heretical ideas.
