Thanks, Tom. I spent my young man days as a merchant sailor, and was always fascinated by the men who sailed before me. In my day there was just enough marlinespike seamanship left to make me feel the connection to those olden days.

It struck me that perhaps a contributing factor to the ability of these people to achieve such feats is that they had no distractions. Also life was tough and knowledge was gained slowly. You can't help but have a deep respect for what they achieved, pretty much always against the odds. Thanks for sharing.

Tom, the only thing I dislike about your videos is they are way too short. I could have listened to an hour or two of you going on about this ship.

Sorry chaps. it's kind of you to say you'd like more. The trouble is, it takes ages to put these things together and Roz and I have day jobs writing, sailing, consulting, working on our navigation app AngelNav and, and, and... We love doing the videos though, so I'm pleased you are enjoying them, short though they are. Please don't despair of us! Tom

What a fine replica. Not one of these touristy things. Interesting how few iron parts are used. The dead eyes are out of reach from the deck. But before my inner eye I see a guy hanging above the cold water, the ship going as high to the wind as she possible could so that the lee shroud becomes loose, and the guy is pulling the hemp ropes tight…. Thanks for presenting this piece of history. There is a dutch audiobook (Audible) of the journal of Barents and van Heemskerk of their journey to Nova Zemblaya and back. Maybe there is an english version somewhere. Absolutely worth it!

A little adjustment; Willem Barentz died on Nova Zembla , not in Svalbard,where they tried to survive a winter. The ship was lost and from the remaining wood they built a shelter called “ het behouden huys “,meaning something like’ the save home’ . The reason for this trip was to find a shorter Assange to CHINA via the North East route.

Harlingen is my hometown by the way and I see the ship every day,also follies the building of it , interested for the matter as a shipwright myself.

My ancestors came in on the cunliffe ship in the early 1700s from dossenheim Germany to Charleston according to the historical record
@TomCunliffeYachtsandYarns

Very interesting. I believe the Cunliffe was a Liverpool-owned ship and my information is also that she served the colonies in the Carolina Sounds. This is the only other reference I have heard, so thanks for that. My family farmed on the Fylde district just north of LIverpool many generations ago so it all adds up.

@@TomCunliffeYachtsandYarnsyep we have the original document that references the cunliffe and our four or so family members that arrived in Charleston. But i said dossenheim in error as dossenheim is landlocked so they sailed from another city to Charleston

There’s a lot of similarities between white swan and the “ little dove” Duyfken. Duyfken is currently based at the Australian National Maritime Museum in Sydney NSW. Worth a look if you’re ever over here..

Dear Tom, please don't make the sailing abilities too bad in your stories. With the replica ship Halve Maen (Half Moon), similar to Witte Swaen, we proved that these ships could sail to windward about 70 degrees, including drift. In any kind of sea state at anchor on a lee shore, all sailing vessels will have a problem and will be stuck at anchor being unable to sail away. There must have been good reasons to send this size of ships with this type of rig out on expeditions, one of them being excellent sailing capabilities. Hard to imagine, but they were excellent sailing vessels.
@RosCunliffe
@RosCunliffe Ай бұрын
@@RonGroenestein Thanks for the comment. Some expansion is certainly in order. Things change radically in a heavy sea with the ship under short sail when leeway increases and pointing falls off. Anchoring on a Lee shore was only a last-ditch survival option because, as you rightly say, a square rigger particularly would need a lot of sea room to get properly under way. Hence the old saying, ‘Anchor and hope.’

I always wonder how a schooner rig would have been received in the 16th century
@akcarlos

they had Caravels around the time which had fore and aft sails like a schooner but the hull shape would have made a huge difference. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caravel

Well, let's put it this way: the first thing Columbus did was to switch from fore and aft to square rig. After the 7 Years War, when Lieutenant James Cook was given a schooner to chart the newly acquired territories after France lost North America. The first thing he asked permission to do was to re-rig the vessel as a brig as he needed maneuverability and speed. The correspondence exists. This is about as clear-cut as you can get in the relative advantages of the two rigs. Schooners were cheaper to operate as they required smaller crews. All exploration vessels, however, were square-rigged.
