Since making this video i have tested the effects of wheel weight further The 18” 6.41 is indeed a hero run. It was deemed “invalid” by dragy as well. If you want to see a better picture of wheel weight and its effect on performance take a look at this video where i also test the effects of headers vs worn oe cats kzbin.info/www/bejne/paGqZJiNpsiqfNU

I have the 68s and had the 135s, too. Because of the weight, i didnt put them on the e46, sold them instead. Now i have a set of BBS RC 303 in 18", 8.5, which come in at a shade under 8 kg each, around 1 kg less than the 68s. I have also bought the compound disc brakes for the Front, official BMW, and will save an additional 1.3 kg per wheel at the Front, in total then around 7 kg less compared to a staggered 68 setup. Do you think this weight saving will be noticeable?

@@OEMplusRESTO yes, will do. BBS says 225 all round or f.e. 225 245/255. I wanted the conti sport 7, because they are light and have very good reviews, but the only match is one 225 with near identical diameter and circumference, compared to official allowed tyre wheel combinations. Will probably go therefore staggered again with PS4, as there are Lots more options. The reason the 17s do not perform as well as the 18s has to be due to less traction... Weather because of the smaller diameter(smaller contact patch), lower width(smaller contact patch), different tyre compound, or the extra torque from the smaller wheel diameter causing a lower effective gear ratio leading to excess wheel spin... Even the design of the 17s is better for acceleration & efficiency - compared to the 18s...🤔

I have e46 coupe,320ci(m54b22 engine) manual gearbox. Sommer tires 225/45R17(Michelin pilot sport 4) on all 4 wheels, style44 oem alu rims. With tires one wheel weighs 20.2kg.Winter tires 205/55R16 on 4 wheels(Bridgestone Blizzak). They weigh 16.2kg per wheel. Diference in drive is huge. With winter tires and 16 inch steel wheels car is much more agile and responsive. Don't have dragy to mesure diference in acceleration, but I can feel it, car is faster from standstill. Been readind that Porche make some testing about wheel mass. They said that 1kg in rotation is equal as 6kg of load in the car. So..... mass of the wheel is very important for preformance of the car. Lighter the wheel you get better braking(less mass to stop from rotation). Big wheels look great..... but smaller wheels preforme better. Bmw power. 😎💪

Hi! You’ve ashed how could you improve the video so here’s my input: - Could have put wheels on a weight and show the results (cheap house weight with 0.1kg precision) - Record few launches and show best of each on all setups. - To be anywhere deterministic you’d have to have same sizes and tires for 0-100. If you can’t afford to make it happen it’s better to show rolling start results where tire grip won’t affect the result. - More to the point, less talking around. - Make your vid’s more informational, I.ex. about benefits of lower unsprung mass in car, how it benefits handling and elongate life of suspension components, benefits of higher side wall of tire, how it helps absorbing so less stress on suspension also more comfortable for the driver and passengers. Slimmer and lighter wheel equal lower fuel consumption. How a bigger radius of mass makes it so cars lose a lot of power just to move something that’s heavy and further from center. Also negatives of slimmer tires (I. ex. less grip on dry, higher braking distances), higher side wall ( I. Ex. worser feedback). Good result overall, liked - just not enough to subscribe yet, keep going ;)

If you do this video again, roll runs will be far more accurate in showing the speed difference because it eliminates the tire (compound/tread and age) differences that effect traction at launch. Something like a 20-100kph or 20-150kph (if you have the road for it) would make for a much more conclusive comparison.

At a 20 or 19 inch size the larger wheel s will dominate simply because the same amount of power it takes to move the 15 size rims widget is get more more done or distance with a 20 at the same weight , gram lights and specially made wheels it’s custom ,,,,, I’m also into gearing it’s amazing fulcrum effects , amazing evaluations once again thanks for your data 👍🏽🤓 love learning

Hi Riccardo I have never experienced the problem youre describing. I dont shift slowly in this car either. Filling it with aft6 greatly improves the shifting feel and speed versus old oil. The problem youre describing doesnt sound like a gearbox problem though. But maybe more of a clutch problem really. Or a slave cylinder issue perhaps. Issues with the clutch can affect the gearbox as well resulting in sometimes, clunky shifts. But maybe im misunderstanding you. Do you mean that the 1st to 2nd shift sometimes is tricky so when you release the clutch the rpm is too high and the car will jerk foreward as the clutch engages? If so. I have had great luck with liqui molys gear protect and atf6 combined in the getrags 420g

Mate, nice channel btw. I own the very same car. Really interesting because I installed M3 Style 67 (19 inches). According to RealOEM these rims weighs only 11,8kg & 12,4kg. The weight for Style 68 are 10,15 kg & 10,55kg (Front&rear). My guessing is that weight difference in your measurements are due to incorrect tire size, adding rubber and pressed air where there is no need. Regarding diameter, in Spain is only legal to change rims if you adapt the size of the rubber, so I am running 225/35/19 front & 265/30/19 rear. In this rubber the total diameter is even smaller, gaining less flank & precision through corners. Acceleration I couldnt tell, but for sure I gained traction at corner exits. To be honest, the combination of less height & wider rubber compensates any loss in pure acceleration. Personal opinion, of course.

Thanks you for the insight. Bigger wheels(more tire) definitely has a place in this world. What are the laws in your country regarding stuff like exhaust and other mods if i may ask?
@oquemar1984
@oquemar1984 Жыл бұрын
All mods should get an inspection similar to German TUV and some reports. The process is something called “homologation”. You need to get an official report from the fabricator that the part meets BMW Technical regulations, a second report from a mechanical engineer and finally a workshop stamp that the part has been installed correctly. Finally, Spanish TUV inspection. Long and money consuming. There are shortcuts if the fabricator has made it before (Recaro seats I.e.), but generally you need lots of money for it.

Styling 157 wheels (from the E90) are forged, very light and easy to come by. They should fit the e46 330 as they are 17 inch wide. They are not the prettiest though...

Thanks for the question. Not always. Im no expert but in hindsight the smaller wheels have a gearing advantage and lighter weight. Just poor tires that cant grip! The 17”/ with good tires and possibly a locking diff would almoat certainly be faster than the 18”

Weight doesnt make much sense if the wheels arent the same wheels in all sizes. A second faster by going from 19 to 18inch wheels no way, never, maybe 0.1 or 0.2 max but 1 second is hilarious.

@@swansmeister I have a lot data about that, different dynos with big difference in hp, other tests like this published on the internet of different cars and its consistent. 19" usually has the double of moment inertia than 17" In this case it is not just the difference from 19 to 17, but the huge difference of 44kg (97lb). And unsprung mass has nothing to do with acceleration, but with suspension.

Hey buddy, interesting video. A couple of important points: - The 17s are definitely going to give you faster acceleration than both the 18s and 19s. - It's never about the rims, it's always about the tire height, or the total diameter of your wheel, because now you're adding torque, it's like you're slightly altering your differential to a more acceleration-biased one. - When you run your acceleration tests, if you have old tires, your DSC will compromise a lot of your time, that's when the car is periodically cutting off power to limit the spin, that's why you were experiencing 40 and above better acceleration. - We will never know better than what the manufacturer what tire size is best for the car, remember, a car handles better on turns with its original designated height because there's a separate calculation dedicated to how much the car rolls sideways over its tipping point, thus putting down all the downforce for better handling. I have a 2003 e46 320ci that I've swapped for a tuned M54B30 from a 2006 X3 with headers and straight pipes and some other bits and tunes, I now make sub 5 seconds on a good day (Manual transmition) and that's also because I've installed a shorter differential. The only downside of reducing your wheel diameter is top speed and that's all but the acceleration will definitely be better.

Thank/ for the insight. Much appreciated, i wish i was better at making tests(and videoes) when doing this one, This video is really poor. First real video i did. I should have tested it 50-110kmh in the same gear which is what im doing now for various other parts testing. While the gearing change certainly matters, wheel weight does too. I think you will find my diff test video interesting, a 2.93 diff is faster to 100kmh than a 3.38 due to one less gearchange. But the 3.38 accelerates much harder in gear. I will repeat this video again when im able to afford (and find) the right wheels:)

@OEMplusRESTO I have Iridium IX plugs, deleted the fan from the engine and placed it in the bay, some minor weight reductions and I have a very aggressive tune, also they've installed a 318 gearbox so I think that's why it's short, my downside is that I can't do more than 190 - 200kph.
