Chris and I have very similar styles on the mandolin. The only difference is that he uses his fingers, whereas my crazy solos only happen in my thoughts.

Exactly! And yet it still sounds more amazing than you even imagined it to be, not to mention a trip to watch.

Just like Mozart, Beethoven, and Bach. Chris Thile was born to do this. Anyone who watches him or listens to him is fortunate to be born during this time. Amazing prodigy.

Every once in a long while there comes along a genius who puts all the existing genius' in the shade. Here we have a mandolinist,composer, singer, who exceeds in ability to play mandolin, all who have gone before him. As far as I am aware, Chris Thile is the best there is in the world right now. Unless, you can show me better. Aren't we all so blessed?

I hope Chris never gets self-conscious about his stage presence. It is totally evident in his face and movements - how much he enjoys the sounds he makes, and how much he wants the audience to enjoy the song as much as he does. Thanks for the quality video, 1709Steve.

He's like a human muppet, and I love it! *assuming a muppet could be the best mandolin player in the world...

He IS the mandolin. So obvious, his love for what he does. I wish everyone could find that kind of joy in something. Can hardly wait to see where he takes A Prairie Home Companion.
@caitlin.hardee9 ай бұрын
saw him the other year on his solo Laysongs tour and he said something in the lead-up to "Salt (in the Wounds) of the Earth", it was a bit convoluted, but basically casting various Biblical/demonic figures in the metaphor within the context of the performance, like which bits of him represented which aspects, and then he said something along the lines of, 'my soul, as ever, is played by the mandolin.' Really moved me. I can imagine for an artist of his prodigious gifts that it really does feel like that - a part of your mind, heart, spirituality cradled in this external precious thing that gives it voice.
@austenrobinson27473 жыл бұрын
Most likely the best mando player and musician living. His understanding of theory, composition, improv and flat God given talent won’t come around again in my lifetime. It’s a joy to see he’s actually enjoying what he’s doing and one humble dude having met him twice. Love antying posted on KZbin in a setting like this. It’s a joy to watch.

I just got back from seeing him live, solo, in Minnesota, just he and his mandolin. These videos were good but tonight was about ten times better. Believe it or not. Those moments where he goes off the rails? Try a five minute improv through a bunch of different keys and genres and still with a flawless sense of rhythm. He is a gift from God.

Tuliusy2k - This is actually 3 tunes. The first is Wildwood Flower, followed by Going Steady by Faron Young and the third is the Fox. This video made me crack up at the end with the guy trying to sing The Fox with Chris but is at least 2 beats behind most of the time, doesn't know all the words, and is singing off key. I bet if he had a mandolin, he would share his mandolin talents with the audience as well. There is a reason Chris is on the stage and not the singalong guy...
