I think it's pretty obvious that a solid line means self-conducting (depletion mode) and a dashed line means not self-conducting (enhancement mode).

Sad, but true! After looking at transistor diagrams for forty years, if the part is unlabeled, there are still a few moments of head scratching to figure things out...

I am a sr design engineer and one of the things that I try and teach.....everyone, is to "know your audience." Drawings in general are a non-verbal means of explaining intent to an audience. How effective your drawing should be, depends on your audience and how well you know them. Moreover, it should not over or undershoot as well. These details and nuance are what I feel lots of new engineers and designers are lacking due to lack of training from and older generation, no training at all from an older generation, or lack of desire to adhere to training.

@@StreuB1 I agree. Promulgating conflation and confusion, by inexperience is one thing. Doing it because of laziness is another.

@@universeisundernoobligatio3283 Not sure if your statement means the drawing should be sympathetic towards me... or I should be sympathetic towards the drawing. One of the first steps in creating confusion is an 'unclear drawing.'

Personally I prefer to draw them with the arrow on the source leg, to highlight the similarities with n-(pn) and p-(np) BJTs. Makes it easier to identify them at first sight and to establish the direction of the current. It's probably due to the fact that I primarily think in terms of BJTs when it comes to transistors. Unfortunately for me, most of the software out there uses the substrate arrow convention.

Thanks for posting this very interesting video! As an electronics amateur I appreciate your videos because it's clear you have passion and experience, but sometimes I wish that your videos had more explanation and less iteration. Keep up the good work!

I think of the 3 little lines being broken indicates that without Vgs the unit does not conduct, Broken line == no conduction without Vgs. Or ENHANCEMENT mode,... While a solid line indicates there is conduction until the channel is depleted by Vgs. (did I get it correct?) So then applying this to a vacuum tube, what kind of "FET" is operationally similar? 'your answer as a response' ;-}

Large numbers of symbols are mostly collected by collectors, not by hunters, so they might not all be correct or significant. Just one point for the characterization of FETs: When the gate-source-voltage is zero, the channel is non-conductive at enhance mode FETs, so it can be enhanced with conductive charge. When it is conductive at Vgs=0 as at depletion mode FETs the conductive charge can be depleted.

You said "Large numbers of symbols are mostly collected by collectors, not by hunters, so they might not all be correct or significant." I agree. If I have to do 100 things; but 99 of them I mostly never do, then it does not follow, I need to learn to do 100 things: probably just one.

Engineering professors use similar shorthand during live lecture to avoid it devolving into an art exhibition. Either you’re one of the one’s getting it or you’re not. Perhaps consider drawing the slash for the gate representing the insulated gate - whack then slightly longer whack.

Dashed and non-dashed are quite easy to remember. Dashed is for enhancement mode (so normally there is no channel) MOSFETs, and solid is for depletion mode (normally, channel exists) MOSFETs. A little bit trickier is the fact, that the other name of enhancement mode MOSFET is... depleted channel MOSFET, and the alternative name for depletion mode MOSFET is enhanced channel MOSFET. The enhanced channel is naturally conductive, so these transistors work with channel depletion (in channel depletion mode), while the depleted channel is naturally non-conductive, so these transistors work with channel enhancement (in channel enhancement mode).

Using the term FET, for both a MOSFET and a JFET, IMO, introduces ambiguity... and confuses viewers that might be inexperienced. AFAIK... enhancement mode MOSFET is overwhelmingly the type of MOSFET used in digital and analog circuits. How hard is it to remember how to draw 3 or 4 devices?
