I've watched a bunch of content on Zener Diodes, but I have to say that a curve tracer is definitely the best way to explain it.

Another ham sent me a link to your 5 part series of videos about the zender diode. I am glad he did! Thank you for these great videos! It is one thing to read about zener diodes in a book, and it is another to see someone experiment and show the results visually.

Hi Imsai Guy, nice explanation with a sample of the VA characteristic (the tracker is really luxurious - I'm jealous 😁) The Zener diode is a very useful invention not only for voltage stabilization, but also as a fuse against sudden overvoltage in the circuit. Thank you for your videos, I learned a lot (I don't do high-frequency stuff at all, so I only knew the basics) and you brought a lot of information to life for me. I wish you a pleasant rest of the Christmas days and I wish you all the best in the New Year. Nice day 🙂 Tom

Ah! Wish I had a curve tracer in my lab to demonstrate to the students these kinda experiments. Makes learning fun

could it be done with an oscilloscope "ch1 vs ch2" option? One channel measures voltage across the diode and the other its current (voltage across a small resistor)
Shows the importance of making sure that you avoid the knee if you don't want your reference voltage to change with current.

Always been fascinated with the curve tracer. And I recently got my hands on one and restored it. I document it on my own channel. But you can use the display offset and magnifier switches to get a more accurate reading of that zener breakdown voltage. Yours looks in excellent shape!

I also have videos on restoring mine. It was in pretty rough shape.

can you make similar series on TVS diode? please.

That curve tracer is such a great learning/teaching tool. Do those external ones that plug into a scope (that I see on ebay) work worth a darn?
@IMSAIGuy7 ай бұрын
they are pretty basic. low voltage.

All diodes have zenering points.

they all breakdown but not in 'zener effect'

There is a differce between Zener og Schottky Diodes - you are aware of that?

Great presentation. Curve tracers are much better than static pictures in books. Just FYI, Dr. Clarence Zener earned a PhD. from Harvard U. in 1929.

OK, I won't hold that against him

hitting a diode breakdown voltage doesnt immediately kill it. there are scr/transistor/diode testers that go up to 3kV with 1..5mA to check at what voltage it breaks down. without actually killing the DUT. just dont hook it up to a fet gate

I wouldn’t have kept changing the scale. Just leave the origin in the center. You might have confused those new to this.
