I enjoyed this episode! Thanks for your time and effort!!! I started watching CR during the Pandemic shutdown. I would play Zelda: Breath of the Wild while listening to CR. So, in my mind, Exandria looks a lot like the Kingdom of Hyrule. At 69 and a retired school teacher, I have the time to watch CR on KZbin. Actually, I listen to it while cooking or doing chores because I know who is who by voice. I pay attention to the visuals during key combat moments.

So happy with Deal's shout-out to The Mighty Boosh at 53:10!! Also, although the Cormyr Purple Dragon Knight presented in the UA has seemingly nothing to do with the actual organization, I'd love to see a story where it does. The subclass looks like a lot of fun!

I gave up for campaign 3 and just do the podcast when I run now. Though, even at running around an average of 12-15 km 4-5 days a week, I'm *still only finishing episode 25 today! AND I LISTEN AT x1,5!* 😅 I did used to listen to other stuff as well, but now I'm down to 2 podcasts so I'll make more progress on Campaign 3 as I'm running a D&D Campaign set not long before on Exandria and I'd like to know what's been going on in C3. I feel like there's so much Critical Role content (which is not a bad thing, as I enjoyed it all) and not enough time to consume it all if you have a job and other hobbies, outside of being a Critical Role fan. 🤓

I've gotta insert my usual stance into the "should Critical Role do edited episodes?" argument, because there's a secret third option: Full, uncut TTRPG sessions, but on a strict timer. If you follow for example, Acquisitions Incorporated: The "C" Team's example and run a tight 2-and-a-half hour session with a half-hour aftershow, you still get all the benefits of playing Live D&D, with far less incentive for people to duck out partway through because they have to work in the morning. Highly underrated approach to actual plays in my book.

I think that adventure has promise. Personally I think published adventures should lean more towards creating templates that GMs can learn from on how to do scenarios. As was said, undead horde survival game is hard to run and actually make fun, even though it's a super cool premise. So something that points out the pain points of the scenario and how to mitigate those is far more useful to me than a list of stat blocks and the order to throw them at the party.

23:11 I do indeed expect Daggerheart as a base system for Campaign 4. If there is going to be an actual 4th main campaign. So far I am not really interested in Daggerheart, though. And with that I actually may not be interested in a related show. The vocal part of the community seems to be looking forward to Critical Role moving away from DnD, but I seriously expect a major part of the audience will be lost in the transition. A vast amount.

I suspect part of the reason Twitch viewership is down for CR is because they prerecord now. There is very little point in tuning into a live stream that isn't live. Like if you've ever watched a KZbin Let's Play vs a a gaming stream, even if the streamer isn't interacting with chat the energy of the streamer is different. Now imagine if most Twitch channels were prerecorded Let's Plays. Why would anyone want to watch that on a regular basis if it's all gonna be on KZbin in a few days

I fell off D20 because of it being edited. I personally want Critical Role to not be edited in that way. A lot of its charme and atmosphere stems from it not being edited. Great ep as always! Ankylosaurus for me. I would have to disagree on the purple dragon knight, if only because it was supposed to be a banneret. The newer one is better mechanically, and I agree it would've been hard to make it mechanically worse than the original, but the new one has nothing to do with the original. This new one is Int based instead of Cha and does nothing with Int for you. I don't care about the lore piece, but I would like a properly done banneret. Though I suppose you could argue that's just a college of valor bard and that would be fair, except you're then forced into spellcasting/lower hp chassis instead of having a badass battlefield leader type. They could just finally give all fighters access to a couple of the battlemaster maneuvers and be done with it also, so you can tailor your fighter with a couple of tricks. I don't know, new purple dragon knight just steps on the drakewarden's toes and ditches the support/lead from the front fantasy altogether. I can see switching it to Int to have a more tactical flavor vs a Cha flavor, or even having the player choose one of those two directions when they pick the subclass, but give the character something (per prof bonus use abilities in the chosen stat) for having that stat dependency in either case.

I don't get the difficulty, there are tools for indexing page references automatically in book editing software. You just need to have the items properly marked. I don't think that's a good excuse... I have a pet peeve with vampires losing regeneration, and the layout of statblocks could be better, but in general I really like the book and there was a general improvement to how monsters work. Drakkenheim beats Critical Role. Its more bite sized. It feels like a real DnD game, not a show. The smaller cast is consistent and because of that the game is easier to get into if you're just listening. You never have to think to yourself "which one of the players is currently speaking?". After watching Drakkenheim i feel spoiled - I tried listening to other live plays but with groups of 5 or more players, I just can't follow. Last but not least - Monty is a master DM and the cast are awesome players. Shout-out to Jill and Joe. Kelly, you'll get there.

In the age of digital tools that vastly outperform any attempt at creating a logical system to find stuff in a book, it doesn't really matter that much, but: I find it mind-boggling that in terms of alphabetization, they decided to go with the use case assumption that people are more likely to remember all the silly names and know whether they're actually looking for a Yugoloth or more of a Glabrezu or a Barlgura, rather than than go "let's see, what was that cool demon I saw again? or let's see what dragons there are, or what golem or giant stat-blocks are available. It seems like a decision made by people who struggle to put themselves into the shoes of people who aren't quite as well-versed in D&D monster lore as themselves. It's like with spells: What letter they happen to begin with is so arbitrary that knowing whether it's under A or Z will give you no useful information (you might be looking for or trying to leverage). Now compare that to a spell's level, which gives you a rough idea of a spell's power AND the one time where people are most likely to browse the spell list is by far at character creation or when they've leveled up and have access to a new spell level. Strict alphabetization is the fall-back system for when you simply can't think of any structure that's more useful and I think in both these cases it's not because there's no superior alternatives...
@johnmickey5017
@johnmickey5017 5 күн бұрын
Alphabetical speeds spell lookup at the table. Someone casts Sleep, to S, not “remember it’s level 1 then find Sleep”. I’ll take the preference for speed for at table play. Spell rules by level is mostly valuable at character creation. But that doesn’t really apply to monsters, which are a prep item.
@sweetderpg

For new DMs who are running a module or other pre-written adventure it's far easier to look up the name of the creature than know what type it is. There's nothing about "Balgura" that tells me it's a demon
@davec1
@davec1 5 күн бұрын
@johnmickey5017 I see and mostly agree with your points. However, I believe that in that table scenario it would be only insignificantly slower if spells were sorted by level first before then being sorted alphabetically. If you're casting a spell, you'd better know its level, because you're expending spell slots. You're also likely to know the spells you picked. The default character sheet sorts them by level, too. If you're using some sort of custom character sheet, adding the spell's level requires a single digit. Finally, if you wanted to add tabs to your book to find things more quickly, adding one tab for 9 levels is more likely to fit than adding tabs for 26 letters. At the end of the day, though, it doesn't matter, unless your table enforces a strict no-phones policy, because looking it up in an app will always be quicker...

I think what we really need to see is a discussion on how AI can help with editing the index in RPG books
@Maximilian_Romus
@Maximilian_Romus 4 күн бұрын
Don't need AI for that. The software you use to create the book brings indexing automatically.

CR3 isn't a heroic campaign unlike even the CR2, maybe that's it? "Are you heroes, or are you mice?"

I stopped watching CR campaign 3 after about 20-25 sessions because I didn’t like any of the player characters. Now when I check back in on it, this same group of irresponsible, indecisive, amoral chaos goblins has been thrust into the position of saving the world, and they’re being entrusted with responsibilities by powerful NPCs who really ought to know better. So there’s a huge mismatch between the story Matt’s trying to tell and the characters the players made. They have no conviction and no plan, but Matt needs to wrap this campaign up so he can finally divorce CR from any IP that WotC owns and they can be fully independent.

I do not know a lot of Eberron lore, that said i do have to disagree with James, if you look at the changes that Wizards has been doing to their classes and races of late, the game has become very meh. What I mean is you want to be a human bladesigner feel free, where as it used to be Elf only. So following the examples set I do think anyone and everyone will be able to get a dragon mark. That said you DM can still do what they want in regards to their came, its just that wizards has been removing those types of restrictions over the years.

Those restrictions were dumb anyway. It's because of the lore? No one cares about the lore. Especially DMs with their own homebrew worlds.

@@Maximilian_Romus Does not change my point and there is nothing wrong with lore and a dm could change them either way.

I do not like CR. It is a great setting, lore, and story, but watching or listening to it feels contrived and I can see through the play as more of a performance than a real d&d experience

They are just being dramatic because it makes them fun to watch. They still act like RPG players though.

@@ericgonzales419 They are both players and preformers. The reason it looks so different is because most players are playing for themselves whereas they are playing for you. They are hamming it up for other peoples enjoyment.

@mkklassicmk3895 are you enjoying talking down to me? I have explained my opinion twice now and you feel compelled to defend people you don't even know. Pretty cringe man; your parasocial fixation on CR is exactly the type of thing I don't understand about the CR fandom

@mkklassicmk3895 2 күн бұрын
@ I did not talk down to you, I barely even disagreed with you. I also hardly ever watch CR so I definitely don't have any sort of para-social fixation with them. Don't go calling other people cringe when you clearly don't even know how to have a regular conversation with a stranger. Your reaction is what was cringe, the way you decided to attack me out of the blue is what was cringe, nothing I said should have garnered this sort of reaction. As a side note, "talking down to someone" is when you talk to someone like they are lesser than you, which I clearly didn't do. If I was going to talk down to you it would have involved insults. You should really treat people better in the future.

All I want is Wizkids release the Adult Amethyst dragon of SAME size as previous dragon " minis ". And WotC get the head out of gutter and include Sardiors Gem dragons in more source books ( and update the Draconic Sorcerer with Gem elemental types!!! Also Gem dragonborns! More art, Nolzur gem minis )and second even third set of 5 dragons for each if the main 3 dragon famillies. Actual Purple dragon ( deep is a sub species of seemingly ), Orange, Yellow, Grey, Brown,. Jacinth, Ruby, Obsidian, Citrine, Diamond. Steel, Orium, Mithral, Mercury, Adamantine etc. All these are dragons and MUST have wings. No oversized salamander or oriental stuff ( lungs havr own group! ) In a future: Fibanz Legendary Draconomicon 500+ pages. Bonus? The common known dragons are included aswell. And rip-out posters of each of at least lesser known dragons🥳😄 Make it happen WotC! 🙌🫶🤝💎
