Famous eBay descriptions: "Removed from working environment.." "Turns on but could not test.." The latter one describes item for sale with background picture of bench laden with full suite of sophisticated Tek and HP lab gear.

@@IMSAIGuyI get that and the seller was honest. I'm talking about the eiphemism that some sellers use to tap dance around the fact that they're cleaning out the garage and the particular item in the auction was in the "smoking pile of dog turds barrel". Say, speaking of which, my 7704A perished and I got some leftover plug-ins I can let you have... _~The Scope King_

The SG503 is looking good! A few things about the plugin that might help. The inductors for the ranges should ONLY be adjusted if the unit is not meeting spec. They are horribly interactive between ranges and can disturb the leveling flatness. The lowest the amplitude knob can be set at is .5 V with the lowest multiplier of X0.01 so 0.050 mV pk-pk it wont go down to 0 The SG503 expects to see a 50 Ohm cable and termination. The reasons for the expense is it is normally used in scope calibration for checking the amplifier bandwidth. The banner specification is the level flatness from 50Khz reference with 250Khz ranges to 250Mhz top end.

I am glad to see an old plug in resurrected... And one of them seems to be very functional....perhaps just in need of pot cleaning

Used many of the plugins in various Tek scopes over the years. I remember when we got our first 7000 series scope with micro-channel display that allowed viewing of really fast rise times in room light. We regularly had a calibration team come in and go through all our test equipment and we would have to pull all the plug-ins and deliver big carts full of them to the cal team.

My colleague at work wanted to use the old HP datalogger today. It had its internal battery replaced by me ages ago which cleared the cal values, unknowingly at the time and it now gave an error when trying to set it up. I suggested we send it off for calibration, he said “I just want it to work!” So I just unlocked and relocked the cal settings and put a big sticker on it, “Traceability Unscheduled”. And so ends the lesson on how not to calibrate something!! But it “works” now.

I love old scopes and counters. Especially HP branded equipment. I always feel like I found a gold mine when I spit them in the wild.

Nice score! I've been looking at some of these plug-ins as well and they are expensive! Which is why I'm glad I scored a TM5003 w/ CG5011 for ~$300. Basically a PG506, TG501, and PG501 all in one. But I would love to grab something like an SG503. Last thing I need (or something equivalent) to calibrate scopes.

Looking from a distance at the SG503 board it looks like a basic LC oscillator with a bunch of gates for the digital readout. The function generators look like they've got more engineering in them. Thank you for this contribution.

Good one enjoyed the video, "poking around Ebay" is so expensive ;-) . Nice to see you got what you wanted!!

Why don’t they ever make cosine wave generators? Why is the cosine discriminated against? 11 MHz? Awesome, it goes to 11. One higher.
@tfrerich Жыл бұрын
At one time they made cosine wave generators, but it was just a phase.
@mikesradiorepair Жыл бұрын
They do, it's called a arbitrary function generator. You can change the output phase of each channel.

An added bonus is that if you ever want to use the power supply you had in the earlier episodes it would be able to achieve full output in the rightmost slot of the 504 (the “high power” slot).

TM unit acquisition syndrome...
@willthecat3861 Жыл бұрын
I doubt it/they was/were dropped (Usually, there is more damage... like the shafts are bent... which is common on scapper units.) The knobs on some of the plugins do crack, split, and fall off. My guess is the plastic shrinks, and the metal insert doesn't. Knobs for them, sometimes expensive... especially on Ebay. Some people 3-D print the knobs (Usually, it doesn't look very good, IMO)

I think sometimes 'Bubba' put a cheater pipe on the Allen wrench when he installed the knob in the past....
