The tactic for Naginata samurais is not to win, it's to lose less. The only samurai they beat would be Yari sams. For example, Naginata samurai might be defeated by Cavalry, but they'll hold out better against cavalry than katana samurai would. Naginata samurai lose to Katana samurai, but they'll do better against Katana samurai than Yari samurai

True. Naginata Samurai do better than Yari Samurai versus Katana Samurai. Only Katana Cavalry and Great Guard can slaughter Katana Samurai. Yari Cavalry get shredded by Katana Samurai. If your cavalry is engaged by spearmen or polearms, then get them the hell out of there. No question of who will win. It's the Yari Ashigaru or the Yari and Naginata Samurai skewering the cavalry.
