@sebastiannielsen4 жыл бұрын
also you were a bit wrong when you said it was on the door. The lock mechanism is usually in the wall inbetween 2 boxes, and the lock bolt extends into a slot in the door. In this way, the coin box can be at the very bottom (so each column of lockers have 1 coin box). This is why they have the tipping coin mechanism for when you unlock - to make it easier/possible to refund you incase something goes wrong with the locker. So the locker only "commits" to the transaction once the locker is unlocked again. Also the button is not something you press manually, but a flag on the door will push the button when its closed, preventing the locker from locking without the door closed.

I have seen locks like this at a public (municipal) swimming pool where the coin was refunded. The button was pushed in by a flap on the door another, lower down, covered the coin return slot. I found that it was possible to push in the button and remove the key releasing the coin (the locker door would still be open). The one in the video looks more advanced with the coin being retained until the key was returned (which is less important in a lock that does not refund the deposit). Better designed lockers (in terms of coin retention, not necessarily from the lock picking perspective) have the coin mechanism inside the door and would only release the coin when the lock had been opened. Most gyms have lockers that take the users own padlock- this has the advantage that an abandoned lock can be destructively removed without a new key having to be sourced.

When these are used in transit stations or the like, they are usually in a busy area where you'd never get maybe more than one minute alone with it. You'd never pull off the cylinder swap unless maybe you brought in a whole other unit already prepped. However, one place I have seen these is in gyms. If you really coordinate it, you might be able to pull that off, but is it really worth it.... (And besides, a lot of these are going to end up in surplus given the state of gyms these days)

A better system would be a very loud alarm that sounds if the master key is used/lock removed but alarm can be disarmed by a separate high security master control, given these are usually in public places a decent alarm would be a significant deterrent. A downside of fitting a higher security master keyed lock to every locker is high replacement cost if the key is lost/stolen by an employee.

I'm just wondering how reasonably possible it would be for a person to go into a train station, airport, convention center or wherever there's enough of these lockers for there to be an effort-worthy level of use, but for them to go in there with their copied master key and start emptying lockers and coin boxes at 8:00 or an hour before the end of the day. I mean, usually these places aren't in secluded areas or hidden away, usually they're in high-traffic areas in high traffic places that's monitored and with there being security and video surveillance around. I'd think picking the master lock alone would be hard to do in such an area.

We had those in Canada when I was a kid. Might still be there. The way they worked was a little different. The hard to pick lock was the only lock per locker. There might be 9 lockers in a column. When you locked your locker, the coin would drop to the very bottom of the column. At the very bottom of each column was a coin box. The coin box had a single lock that was easily picked. If you picked it and opened it, you would get all the coins for the day. You would not be able to open the locker. I think for each locker, they had 2 keys. So if you wanted to open the locker, you had to use a key in the same place as the original key. As someone using the locker, you open the locker, put your stuff in. When you closed the door a tab on the door pressed the button. Now you drop a coin in the lock, turn the key. The locker is locked, you can remove the key and the coin drops to the very bottom of the locker column. As someone working at the lockers, at 9pm at night I would open the coin box at the bottom and collect all the coins. If any of the lockers were still locked, I would have to find the key for that locker, open the locker, take your luggage out, put a note in there telling you were to collect your luggage, use one of the coins from the coin box and the key I used to open it to re-lock the locker. The duplicate key comes out, the coin drops to the bottom (but I haven't put the coin box back yet, so I can easily get the coin again). I then put the coin box back and move to the next column. In this system the only vulnerability was someone could pick the coin box lock and get all the coins for the day. Another vulnerability was people would use slugs from electrical boxes instead of a real coin. Those slugs were the same size as a quarter, so they worked really well.

The vending machine has another weakness, the coin you put in would always drop straight to the coin box but you could also cancel the transaction, getting a fresh coin/change from a stack inside. I kind of exploited that feature too. In the end it "only" cost them a few sodas because the excess money was put back into their own arcade machines. Ah man, I hope all the train station/airport rats aren't watching your vids. I was in Paris France last year and those lockers are guarded; you have to go through security and they xray your luggage before you can put it in the locker just like in an airport. Thanks for the video and stay safe out there.

no its not just the lockers that are guarded. You have to get through xray/metal scanner just to get to the "secure boarding side". But ofcourse they ought to have some checkin solution or "cargo desk" or whatever, incase you want to take knives or other prohibited items with you. (checkin solution / cargo desk = a place where you checkin you main luggage, which will then be inaccessible - on a cargo traincar - during the trip - and then you only have your "handbaggage" which is only cabin-permitted items)

@@sebastiannielsen yes, there is a full security check in France. The subject is the locker so your point is?

@@sebastiannielsen France and Italy had some train stations terror bombed by bombs in unattended coin lockers. They may still be keeping the TSA countermeasures.

Interesting how they designed the lock to hold onto the quarter until the key is returned. I wonder why they designed it that way rather than just have the coin drop into the coin box immediately.

Probably the cheapest and most reliable design they have come up with so far. I doubt you'd be able to get your coin back with a string through it unless you just left the string hanging out while you left your luggage in it.

Because this way you can use the same mechanism on a bank of lockers which returns your coin instead of keeping it. They just put a coin return slot at the bottom of the column instead of a secure box. Then the locker will keep your coin until you return the key. If it dropped the coin immediately you could lock multiple lockers with one coin and keep all the keys.

Why go to the trouble of replacing the master lock and impressioning the old master lock so you can come back later for a one time hit to steal a bunch of suitcases at once (how suspicious would that be?) when the master locks can be opened in a few seconds with a jiggler key, allowing one or two suitcases per day to be stolen?

That looks a lot like a CH751.... is it?

Or after having made a master key, put the original master-keyed lock back in, then every day, empty each coin tray except for a few quarters each and leave the belongings alone, then lock them back up. That way, no one will report anything missing and the operator will just think they're having slow days. Meanwhile, you've got a nice ongoing revenue stream.

We have those lockers but the manager key is nothing like that. It’s more secure than that style lock.

What I would do if I had to put my valuables in on of those is stick gum in the upper lock so it can't be raked. 👍🏻

I doubt you'd be able to get the panel out when the big locking slider is in the locked position making the managers lock a non-issue when the customers lock is locked.
