Back in july I lost my dad to cancer and all he ever did once he retired was travel. it was his life long dream to travel and he was able to see the entire united states except for alaska before he passed. I'm telling you all this cause when I watch your videos it feels like im there with him. I have taken a few road trips in his honor just to see what he has told me avout all these years and I finally got to see what he was talking about. Thank you for all your videos and I look forward to the next one.

Good to see this footage from 2015. This was right after I-5 was repaved through the Grapevine, and I took that very route into LA about six months before you did, and I found the ride was way smoother than it was when I went through there in late 2013. Back in 2013, those right two climbing lanes through there were really rough due to all the truck traffic over the years.

Been over this route a number of times and I always found the funky way in which the road runs (NB/SB lanes swapping sides, many twists and turns, etc,) interesting. Also I miss those cool old button-copy signs California had forever. They gave these roads a special kind of character.
@FreewayBrent6 жыл бұрын
FreewayBrent here (not FreewayJim, lol). The reason for the pavement swap between northbound and southbound through 5 Mile Grade is because today's northbound lanes used to be the 2 way alignment for the old US 99. When the new lanes were constructed, it was decided that due to the sharp curves of the old alignment, that the older alignment be better suited to handle traffic going uphill. Trucks going southbound traffic going down the old alignment, with those sharp curves and downhill descent meant that trucks would occasionally burn out their brakes. The new lanes feature a gentler and straight 5% grade, meaning trucks generally handle it just fine.
@willcampbell89976 жыл бұрын
@@FreewayBrent Wow, I never knew about that. Once again this road has many stories to tell. I remember my folks mentioning how this road was a very steep and winding road back in the 50's, early 60's. I've been over this road in a big truck and I know how much of a climb the NB lanes are. It is nice to know that they had trucks in mind when the road was upgraded to I-5. Also a good thing that they repaved this road recently as I remember the extremely bumpy ride going over.

I went through the Grapevine twice on charter buses going to and from Boy Scout summer camps way back when, so it brings back memories. @Freewayjim6 жыл бұрын
That road needs more energy and tempo than that song has to offer IMO, not sure about the alignments, much of I-5 was built as a completely new alignment.
@wschmrdr6 жыл бұрын
I took a closer look at satellite maps, and it looks like northbound goes through a populated area to the north of Castaic at street level, so it'd seem like it'd be the old through way for US-99. And then when I look at Castaic Rd, I can see why they swapped the north and south because a viaduct likely would have cost too much. I also noticed a paintball range around the northern cross and some at-grade intersections; was there warning signage about that? Or was it closed off?
@Freewayjim6 жыл бұрын
@@wschmrdr I don't recall any at-grade intersections on I-5, might have been service roads that were closed off, IDK.
