The Cosmos was scrapped because CEO Ray Kassar didn't want any internal competition for the Atari 2600. It would also be the reason that the 5200 would be delayed to market and some other internal projects were cancelled as well. BTW never heard of several of these, so nice research. The Ultravision would have been a really cool Vectrex-like self-contained system. And I'm still disappointed the Panasonic M2 never came out because the graphics were about halfway between the N64 and Dreamcast and would have come out just slightly after the N64. There are rumors that the manager responsible for the $100 million buyout of the M2 tech was shunned in a very Japanese way by relocating him to work somewhere very cold like Alaska or Siberia.

My favourites of these consoles are the Taito/ Wowow, Neptune (they should have skipped the 32-X add-on), Indrema and to some degree the Konix Multi-system, which would only be viable with a good compiler that would mask the complexity of the different chips in the system, a bit like the excellent ASM-One for the Amiga 500.

There was a full colour one on the drawing board as well. If I remember correctly, the colour would be produced via mechanical colour filters that rotated in sync with a b&w source. They demonstrated a pair of glasses with a spinning filter that gave the perception of colour on a b&w Vectrex. I guess the spinning disk was too noisy or difficult to keep in sync for a consumer release.

The M2 is definitely my fav. I truly think Panasonic made a mistake not releasing it

Yeah, the M2 could have been great!

The 3DO m2 could be comparable to N64 in some aspects, there are is a channel talking about it and showing previews here kzbin.info/aero/PLjnN8ZeZ9ors_wdYwgTBWfAaRDk1OqF7l

Out of all the consoles mentioned here, the M2 could have been the biggest loss based on its apparent performance. If the Red Jade was able to live up to its hype, that would have been neat too.
@onaretrotip6 жыл бұрын
Definitely, it would have had very impressive capabilities for the time.
@tempestfennac96876 жыл бұрын
@@onaretrotip With any luck it wouldn't have been too expensive if it was released. (I'm assuming you're referring to the M2 rather than the Red Jade due to that one sounding like a pie-in-the-sky idea which would have probably turned out like the Gizmondo?)
@onaretrotip6 жыл бұрын
@@tempestfennac9687 Yes indeed, the M2. The Red Jade would no doubt be as well-regarded as the Gizmondo or N-Gage these days.

Sony's first console was the Playstation in 1995. By that very definition, they were not veterans on the gaming scene. In 1996 they were barely sophomores in the US at the time and depending on the month had not been released in the UK nor Europe.

Good video, but I knew about most all of these already myself, but I think the SEGA Neptune could have done alright if they had not made the 32X an add on in the first place, and had waited on the Saturn another 2 years for the tech to mature a bit with a better architecture that was more easier to program for.
@onaretrotip6 жыл бұрын
Thanks! Yeah, I think you're right there. They really made a mess of things with their 32-bit systems.

How would the Action Gamemaster even work? Would they make the console a television and the modules would have the console's hardware (like the Super Game Boy) which would make the modules more expensive than the console, Or would they somehow shove 4 processors (Remember the Genesis had 2 processors), 3 graphics chips, a PCM sound chip (I don't see why perfect emulation of all 3 sound chips will be needed), a CD decoder, a DAC and an lcd controller. Inside a relatively tiny device with no heat issues so you can make simple cheap adapters. Maybe it is somewhere in the middle, It contains a NOAC, a dumb framebuffer and a resonably fast processor. The modules add the graphics chip and sound chip and load an emulation profile on the processor. This will still be a lot to shove into a tiny device at the time, the emulation will be slow and make all but the NES adapter expensive, but it is the most obvious implementation I can think of. Compare it to the Retron 3 which is 20 years newer and does LESS (no cd player or TV tuner). I can't find what processor the system uses but I doubt it is slower than 200MHz which is around 25 times faster than the Mega Drive and around 55 times faster than the SNES. It is still not portable and bigger. Edit: I found the Retron 3 uses 3 System on a Chips. Not Emulation.

I know, right. It makes no sense. Even if it could work, how on Earth would they make it financially viable?

I found a wierd bootleg Sega Genesis/Mega Drive cartridge of Action 52 that looks better than this Unreleased Console abomination (17:49) Here's a photo of this cartridge: segaretro.org/images/3/3a/Bootleg_Action52_MD_cart_1.jpg I don't even own that cartridge anyways.

Arent all consoles no longer made cancelled? Or are they just on hold?
@onaretrotip5 жыл бұрын
No, that would be classified as discontinued rather than cancelled. In this context it's a synonym for unreleased.
