don’t think she was underrated. i think there was so much pressure on her and expectations. as a teenager, she played with confidence. for about 3 years, beginning at at age 20, she lost all that, doubted herself and had injuries. she lost her starting spot to tobin, but tobin is world class. and tobin was injured for so long. it’s beautiful to see it all coming together now for mal. she’s always been my favorite player. i don’t think i’ve missed a uswnt game or nwsl game with her playing. pUghSA

Not sure how Mal Swanson (Pugh) is underrated. She was a nationally recognized star in High School and turned pro and became a star for both the Chicago Red Stars and the USWNT. She got her first cap and first goal against Ireland in 2016 and has been a mainstay on the USWNT. Despite being injured for most of 2020 and 2021, she came back in 2022 and had another strong season. She was considered the best player in the world at the beginning of 2023 until she was injured against Ireland. Her first game back for the Red Stars saw her score a goal and she was instrumental in the USWNT beating Japan at the 2024 She Believes Cup. Mal Swanson is a bona fide star.

After watching this video I think she was rated correctly. That left foot goal was really nice, but she is clearly (to me at least) a lot better now then she was at 18.
