High cost, limited range, and stupid battery subscription monthly added costs. I don't see any way Vinfast can be successful with their current business model.

Unlike other car makers, They have high cost because they totally rely on the suppliers..so no cost control over a large part of total cost. If a supplier jacks up their price for whatever reason, Vinfast will follow. In terms of quality, you will need to pray that all the parts and components work well together.

Nah, it's the VF8 battery pack, which can be easily replaced to increase the EV ranges. However, VinFast EVs have been considered to be incredibly safe with high quality, according to reports. In fact, VinFast has manufactured over 1 million electric vehicles from fully electric motorbikes and SUVs to public buses, and its first electric motorbike Klara was made Vietnam in 2018. It's been more than 4 years; none of the VinFast EVs exploding or catching fire has been recorded. However, according to an 8-year report in March 2022, on average 8 Tesla cars explode or catch fire every year, and 7 Chinese made EVs including electric motorbikes explode or catch fire every week! Vietnam Plus-a web based news from Hanoi reported on September 14, 2022, since its debut in December 2021 to promote its environment awareness, a fleet of over 200 units of fully electric public VinBus has safely "carried over 122 million passengers" in Vietnam, which are 4 times more than Australia's entire population or about 1/3 of the US population! Surprisingly, not even a single case of VinBus exploding or catching fire has been reported so far. By contrast, cases of electric public buses exploding or catching have been reported in France, America and China. Also, there was an accident about 3 weeks ago involving a VF8 and a semi-trailer truck full of building materials on a Hanoi freeway in Vietnam. The truck crashed into the right side of the VF8. The T-collision just caused the VF8 to have a mild dent on its side doors and the VF8 driver walked away unharmed after the crash, but the truck was totaled. Go figure! www.flyingpenguin.com/?p=42313 kzbin.info/www/bejne/rqCthHqneJ2gnas kzbin.info5KHs6jyCsEI

Their previous cars were literally retrofitted BMW and Chevy lol. In terms of technology they have nothing. My guess why the VF EV costs so much is because they have to import most of the components and they probably use spared low-end batteries from Gotion which explains the pathetic range.

I really like its appearance, its luxury feel and build quality. I actually reserved a vf8 but after the announcement of city edition and pricing, I was so disappointed. I dont see how in the world anyone would want to pay $55,000-$59,000 for a EV car with just 179 miles range nowaday. The standard Tesla model 3 with 260 miles range is still way better than vf8 city edition and the price is just $48,000 much cheaper than vf8 city edition. The actual range probably is no more than 100 miles if you keep the battery between 20%-80% charge. This is way too short. The problem with Vinfast is that they dont own any technology. Thus, when problems/errors occur, they cannot resolve it more quickly because they didnt develope the technology, therfore, they either rely on whoever sold them the technology or it will take them sometime to figure out how to fix it. Some owners already complained about the 12v battery and infotainment.

Their real estate business in Vietnam is sinking as their sponsorship from the Communist Party is fading. They do have some good and overpriced realestate products but the recent ones are not that great. They have tried making smart phones, TV, retail minimarket... and all failed. Vinfast is now relocated to Singapore and does not have much link to the Vingroup. So, if you guys loose money with Vinfast, I dont think Vingroup will sell their real estate to pay you back. The Party already gave them some warnings and tighten the l;oans/credits, Vingroup and Vinfast are in big trouble.

You’re missing a lot of key information in this review. This edition that’s being released is the “city” edition and is meant for customers who don’t need a lot of range and are interested in getting their hands on the early edition model. You speak of the American market and don’t have any experience here. You constantly mention their decision to leave Australia which is valid but don’t mention how it make sense to work out of the American market where there is a much larger market to sell to. They’ve also invested in building a factory stateside to obtain the tax credit for customers. While there are growing pains I find it wildly irresponsible to say they won’t be successful at all based off your personal bias. The delayed power response is a good idea because it helps makes the transition easier from ICE vehicles. There is no need to have a full size suv doing 0-60 in less than 4 seconds. It’s unsafe and most drivers are not experienced enough to deal with that type of performance. It also helps with mileage. You have some good info but the constant fire and brimstone for every manufacturer and their products seems lazy.

Vinfast looks like it wants to follow Tesla's lead and base vehicle manufacturing on localised supply chain partnerships or on its own strategically located in-house production as far as possible. It is impossible to make the Viking happy. Unless the company is Tesla or BYD then they must be doing everything wrong! Vinfast comes to EV auto manufacturing without any ICE era ballast. And, it has deep pockets and a clear plan. Importantly, Vinfast is not a fly by night operation. It is investing heavily in new manufacturing facilities. It will be very interesting to see how Vinfast fares. Is there room for another cleanskin/21st century manufacturer of mainstream EVs besides Tesla and BYD (and other emerging EV automakers in China) to strut the world stage? One way or another, I'm glad to see Vinfast in this for the long haul.

@@chris27gea58 I get the argument you are trying to make, but still Vinfast is not going to succeed. Yes Tesla and BYD are very successful, even compared to other EV makers, because they are highly vertically oriented carmakers focused only on EVs, and BYD is growing even faster than Tesla because BYD is also the second largest lithium cell manufacturer in the world, so they have an endless supply of batteries to put into their cars. Vinfast is trying to copy that blueprint of success, and trying to do it so quickly that they're already putting cars on a boat to send to the US to sell. But there is just no way they can succeed. Having deep pockets, a fancy factory, and a plan, doesn't mean they can make a good car that can be sold for a profit. I don't care how many companies VinGroup (VinUni, VinPhone, VinThis, VinThat) owns, the Saudis have more money, and the EV maker they are bankrolling, Lucid, is still in production hell and having trouble staying afloat, and Lucid has been working on their ONE model for over 10 years. Vinfast is gonna come in, and develop 3 to 4 different EV models, AND setup a US factory in NC, AND do all that in like 3 years? Not a chance in hell. The Chinese can do it because they have a MASSIVE automotive sector that's been building 20 million cars per year for decades, with joint ventures with every major carmaker in the world that have transferred technology and other knowhow, as well as an army of engineers and other technicians knowledgeable about every aspect of the automotive supply chain. You couple that with the Chinese government that has spent at least 10 years building up China as the unquestioned global leader in lithium battery production. BYD, chinese EV startups, and state owned automakers pivoting into EVs can all draw on this to accelerate their transition into making plug in vehicles, and that's what they are doing. But Vietnam has NONE of that, which is why the early test of the VF8 has shown it is an extremely half baked and highly inefficient vehicle, not ready for American consumers. Vinfast can have all the money in the world (not that they do, since BYD, CATL, and all the Chinese majors have more money), but they simply do not have access to the technical knowhow, human resources, as well as lithium and just general carmaking supply chain which would allow them to develop a competitive EV. And it will take them years, if not decades, to catch up.

@@tren133 Look, I don't object to anything you have said because I don't know what the future holds (just as you don't). I dwelt on two matters. First, Vinfast is a company to watch owing to its deep pockets and the seriousness of its efforts so far. Second, it is absurd to expect Vinfast or any new player in the EV game to have everything down pat today. Tesla in 2019 wasn't the company that it is today - it was a company starting to look like that it could become the company that it is today. Now, if you are discounting Vinfast's chances right off the bat then I think that shows a lack of familiarity with what Vinfast is up to and, frankly, your conclusion is premature. Amongst the new players, viz. not including legacy auto companies (either based in the USA, Europe, China or Japan), Vinfast is notable for the lengths it has gone to in order to start making itself into the vertically integrated company that it will need to be if it is to have any chance of success as an EV auto company. Just for the record, Vinfast has contracts with South Korean, Chinese, Israeli and Taiwanese battery manufacturers and it will be making it own batteries in Vietnam at least. It wouldn't shock me if we see a JV battery factory in the USA, either. Vinfast understood what it was getting itself into when it started building the North Carolina vehicle manufacturing plant. Associated investments will likely follow. Unlike a lot of vehicle manufacturers Vinfast isn't complaining about rules governing subsidies in the USA. On the contrary, its USA operation is key to Vinfast's global plan - vehicle sales in Vietnam, in the near term, will be insufficient to sustain a successful foray in auto manufacturing on a global scale. Vinfast, on the contrary, looks like it is following the Tesla 'localisation' play book with the US operation right at the centre of things. The difference of opinion we have on this matter comes down to this. I think Vinfast's moves so far have shown that the company understands what it has to do to be successful. Whether the company can follow through on what it has started is an open question.

Adding to what you already knew, Vingroup (making Vinfast) bussiness style is "instant noodle" style. Before the EV Vinfast, they made smart phone, smart TV then petrol cars..., all have short lives. EV making bussiness could has short life as well. The Vinfast EVs are simply assembled in VN from predominantly oversea technologies and components. In my opinion, the Vinfast people are dwarfs but wanting to act like giants.

Ludicrous mode…..as to cost. US customers have Tesla as the standard to compare all other EVs too. The Vinfast falls way short on range….nor will most US drivers want to rent a battery. Vinfast will need to revamp their entire car and business model or they will soon be gone. Note: Battery swap type vehicles such as VinFast or NIO are somewhat trapped as to their design of the skateboard. All the cars have to use the same shape battery pack or swap stations would have to carry different shape packs for each model….cost prohibitive. So the manufacturers are handicapped as to the wheelbase and overall size of the vehicles to account for the fixed battery pack shape.

No, it is 42k USD for the "City Version" with a small battery that you have to LEASE. To buy the car and the battery it will cost 57k USD, with a Vinfast "estimated range" of 180 miles. Except one of the few VF8 owners in Vietnam has done initial range testing, and he (Tom Peng) has the Plus version with the large battery (88 kWh usable), and even that version can barely get 180 miles, even though it is being driven in mild weather conditions and at 20 mph average speed because he is driving it in city traffic. That small battery version coming to the US is going to get laughable range when driven at US highway speeds in winter time. Completely unfit for the US market.
@theusa395
@theusa395 Жыл бұрын
You live in the US. You know how big it is. Việt Nam is smaller than the state of California. People don’t drive that far on daily basis. In the US, people commute to work in the winter, very cold or in the summer, very hot, stuck in traffic…,how can the Vinfast EVs handle? One example: driving from LA to Las Vegas on a very hot summer day with 4, 5 persons in the car!

Vinfast has $4 billion they're about the spend on their North Carolina plant (first US sales early 2024) near the Research Triangle, which is basically the Silicon Valley of the Southeast. Ground is already clear/level and building to begin soon. That plant is an hour from Toyota's new $2.5 billion battery plant. And if Sam is right that Toyota hates EVs no doubt that plant will feed Vinfast. VF is getting $1.2 B in incentives from various NC governmental units so that really helps their bottom line.
