1879-80: Familiar Names

Don't I know you from somewhere? The 1879-80 FA Cup had some familiar names. But some were not who they seemed.

It always made me think how many towns in Canada (where I'm from) are named after towns in England, especially here in Ontario. Even right near where I live, most of the towns are English in origin (Windsor, Leamington, Essex, Colchester, Harrow), but I was most surprised by Chatham here being in county called Kent. Not too sure on how deliberate that was, but it did give me a giggle. Fascinating stuff, my man - keep it up!

Yes it is interesting to see how many names from England are repeated in Canada, US, Australia and New Zealand. I sometimes find it a little confusing though. For example Manchester in America is in New Hampshire, yet Manchester in England is miles away from Hampshire which is right on the south coast as opposed to the north west. It's worth pausing on the first round results to see some of the clubs that weren't mentioned. KIldare were a works side from Kensal Green named after the address of the factory. When I looked them up I discovered that at this time the referee was only there to decide on matters where the umpires each side supplied couldn't agree. The results are also notable for the first appearance of a side from that rugby and cricket stronghold, Newcastle-upon-Tyne. They wouldn't enter the competition again for several years, proving beyond doubt that association football had little chance of ever becoming popular in the area.

Yes I think I will say in the next video to hit pause on Round One. I felt I should only summarise Round One from now on as there are more and more teams coming into the competition as we go forward. That said, I maybe should mention some of the interesting teams that didn't make it beyond this stage. I think the referee was introduced to adjudicate between the umpires, as inevitably, there were arguments as the umpires represented their clubs. Odd decision, the umpires really as they were bound to favour their own team. It is strange to think of Newcastle now as anything other than football mad. Yet clearly it took some time to gain popularity in the area. Thanks very much for your comments, and thanks for watching the video 👍

A lot of teams started off playing cricket in those days and many started playing football in the winter months to keep fit.
