1880s OLD WEST DUMPSITE DISCOVERED UNDER SUBURBAN NEIGHBORHOOD

While the 2nd half of this vid may be crappy like a Castoria, the first half is a veritable masterpiece of difficult dump digging in an unlikely location - underneath suburbia !! The Funny Bunny is out of his rabbit hole for the spring and has definitely seen a shadow...a shadow of hundreds of 1800s rootin’ tootin’ wild western botts buried under Prius-driving housewives and pancake breakfasts ! This is a power dump. This is a mega dump. This is what we diggers call...a true bottle dump! And don’t worry; there will be a sequel! (Not of the second part though. Fuck the 2nd part). But watch it anyway. That’s an order, my holy shit-shoveling soldiers of The Bott !

George S. Dickey, chemist, ran an apothecary business in San Francisco beginning in 1850. Some held a supposed acne remedy by brushing their teeth. Earliest bottles were light cobalt-aqua of 1850-1870s, then ambers (1870s---), with another series being chocolates (not variant dark ambers) of the (1870s---). Variants include mortar and pestle with the pestle on the left or right side.

Earliest variants (1860s) have long necks and just the mortar n pestle embossed. They come in blue, aqua and clear (insanely rare in the last 2 colors).The blue applied ones are 70s. Amber applied top is almost unheard of - maybe one broken example known.

J. Bourne & Son's Pottery of Derby, England. The stamp of Bourne's pottery as well as the mark of the London ink company, R & J Arnold, whose ink products filled these stoneware bottles. In its heyday, Richard and John Arnold's early 19th-century firm manufactured over 30 varieties of ink. By the middle of the century, their writing fluid was widely imported into the United States in Bourne's stoneware bottles and had become a competitive threat to the domestic American ink market. The Bourne company dates to 1806, when William Bourne acquired a piece of land in Derbyshire and started producing clay pottery vessels in 1809. William Bourne's son, Joseph, eventually ran the company, and the successive generation of the "J. Bourne & Son" mark appeared ~1850. Eventually, the process for salt-glazed ware was patented and stamped on the base of the bottles below the J Bourne & Son company name. This pottery master ink dates from 1850-1900.

Sacramento had noted Little Japantown that eventually created their own community system of businesses and pharmacies. Teapots, soy sauce jugs, and sake jugs would be Japanese and not Chinese.

Hi guys, Greetings from New Zealand. Impressed with your Chinese items. The small brown chines pot, we know as a 'Gee Oil' container. We have found these in dark brown , light brown, black and cream coloured pottery. Impressed with your 3 soy Sauce containers. We have dug many in our Otago Goldfields, Chinese sites. The seams to be a similar connection to both your site and ours, what with the Chinese items, Portobello Scotland two tones ale stout bottles, stone English ink, and the gum bottle. - bob.

Reddington of San Francisco was the first and oldest pharmaceutical company in the West. Reddington was also the first wholesale drug house in San Francisco. Mind the red paint, cinnabar was often used (Mercury), white paint was usually lead oxide, and yellow was sometimes Cadmium. Always wash your hands before handling any food, leading cause of poisoning in the olden days happened to the workers who didn't wash there hands before breaking for lunch.

Ground lip screw thread for metal (tin?) lid with pouring spout and screw thread metal cap for inserting oil into glass jar. C Riessner manufacturer of kitchen cooking equipment ... and the Queen (kerosene) Oil (cast iron and steel ) Mini Range stove/range. Low, flat, 2 side wooden handles, 2 burners, and a small oven. Height 19.5" Length 17" Width 12.5" Weight 20-30 lbs.

New Subscriber and Amazing Finds. Love that Stoneware Ink Bottle. Made by Denby Potteries in Derbyshire, England for the P&J Arnold Ink Company. The first intact Stoneware Bottle I found is a P&J Arnold Ink made by Denby Potteries. Mine is a bit smaller with different stamps and has the rarer white glaze instead of the more common brown colour like the one you found.

We have a permission on a early lodge building in the heart of a gold rush town. On the Sanborn Fire Maps... does the "X" represent the privy? There are two in the back of the lodge on either side of the lodge building... A next to this lodge was a hotel which is gone.....

Great video Ned thanks, why do some diggers put their finds into buckets of water and some do not? I know its to prevent bruises but it is all relative to the climate of the location the bottles are being dug from?

Great and interesting question ! Old glass is very sensitive to environmental changes such as temp and expansion n contraction due to getting wet / drying out too fast, etc. After they are removed from a stable environment of comfy 55 degree soil that they’ve been sleeping in for over a century, they need to acclimate. Especially if the soil has been very dry the whole time or very wet. (Most soil goes from dry to wet to dry again depending on seasonal changes but some doesnt bc rainwater never penetrates or ground in that area is perpetually saturated. For either of those, it’s good to keep the bott in the environment they are used to for a lil while after removal from the ground so they can acclimate

Hood Sarsaparilla (and Ayers Sarsaparilla) most-likely marketed by Reddington & Co of San Francisco amongst their 24 different patent medicines and products. This bottle 1900-1921 era. Founded by Charles Ira Hood in 1875, C.I. Hood & Co. of Lowell, Massachusetts was among the largest patent medicine companies in the United States and offered a number of personal health products in addition to its well known Hood’s Sarsaparilla. In 1876, Charles followed the lead of J.C. Ayer & Company and began to compound his own sarsaparilla medicine. In addition to sarsaparilla root, he mixed in dandelion, gentian, juniper berries and 18% alcohol. He claimed great success in curing a variety of disorders including “purifying the blood”, heart diseases, dropsy, rheumatism and scrofula. Within two years of launching his product he was on his way to great success. Charles Hood added to his success with Hood’s Tooth Powder, Vegetable Pills, Oil Ointment, Medicated Soap, Dyspeplets (for dyspepsia), TusSamo (for cough) and Hood’s Lotion. Hood died in 1922, and the widow sold off the company.

Ned, Your video was amazing, too bad it couldn't have been even longer. I can't imagine finding sweet bottles two feet beneath the surface. What was the depth when the bots stopped coming? The stoneware was amazing too. Three Chinese pots in different colors. I was surprised that none of them had any damage to their spouts. Why? Were the ginger beers English? If you're interested I would love to purchase from you either or both of the Chinese pots or The Ginger beers, let me know. The Scott's Emulsions bottle looked like the glass was sort of flaky or was I seeing things? Nice age of bottles too. I like when you dig with Funny Bunny he has the bottle bug just as bad as you. So will there be a part 2? Did you finish up the yard ? I've been trying to purchase Western bottles at auctions and it is tough, since it seems like everyone else is too. Any suggestions?
