Thank you for sharing all these antiques stories, my great grandmother who was born in 1895, in Normandy in a realy poor familly near the sea, they used scallop shell to put oil and for the wick, rush or bulrush; juncus in latin, but just the smothy part inside the plant. And when I visit Blasket center in Ireland they show the same lightning technical.

I have seen some of the rush lighting with the big wooden bottoms. I did a little search on them. Google Images has pictures of them. So Alice’s is not a repair, that is how it was made. They also have pictures of the long rush clipped to the candleholder, it was so cool to see that. I learn so much from you guys.

Oh I absolutely love this! I have always been fascinated by early candle holders and just how people of primitive times found ways to have light in their homes. This was like going to a curated museum of primitive lighting. What knowledge Alice has 😮!!! I certainly hope she has wrote a book on all things primitive 🤗 along with pictures of her different collections.

So not to sound like I’m criticizing. But it takes more dips than 25 dips to make a candle. Takes about 80 to 90 dips to make candle as someone who that’s what I do is hand dipped candles. Also the oil lamps that you were pointing out calling them cruise, I’ve never heard that word before. I can’t seem to find it in any of my notes. If you could help me out with finding that never heard it before. The one that looks like it’s doubled. Yes that is too collect drippings. They found that when your burning crude oil or whale oil that too much gets sucked into the wick and starts to drip so they created variations to keep the wick off of the edge of the main Container to then drip back into the pot.

Better elaborate on the equestrian of what did they use for wicks. It would’ve been cotton or linen twine wicks. The styles of wax being used in the 18th and early 19th century would be tallow which comes from the Hardy fats of sheep and cows, beeswax, and spermaceti, which comes from this cavity in the head of the sperm whale. Paraffin wax wasn’t discovered until the 1830s. And also you had Bayberry, which was not a popular wax used every day but for very special occasions. Again as a post, I commented a couple days ago on the fact that it takes about 80 to 90 dips to make a candle. This lady really do much of her research before the video. She has such a great collection of oil lamps. But doesn’t know much about them.
@Joshuadummitt

The lamps you’re pulling off of the mantle are all whale whale. And they are missing pieces. And again, if someone could elaborate on the name, cruise as a historian of lighting, never heard of it. And I can’t find it anywhere.
