oh.. a vacume-cleaner up in that loft would have been nice before creating a new hole in the ceiling to avoid bad dust from getting into the new consumer unit.
@ashmanelectricalservices43185 жыл бұрын
Super neat job, my only niggle is the height of the new consumer unit... I recently replaced and relocated a consumer unit, all the original final circuits had to be extended, a large adaptable box and MF connectors was the way to go for me.
@artisanelectrics5 жыл бұрын
Thanks! Yeah could have moved it down low I guess but would have been a lot more work extending cables and I hate the look of the big adaptable box for the MF connectors and trunking run down the wall.

Multiple circuits in one conduit is no different really to an industrial install with a big trunking system. Labelling (and using the appropriate holes for the neutrals and CPCs) is the key, that and eg for ring finals doing the ring tests from a socket that makes it obvious which leg each wire is from as they eg come from opposite sides ;)

@TheChipmunk20085 жыл бұрын
I guess the 'no different circuits in one conduit' rule depends on how you define a conduit. If it implies one round tube, then I can see that the rule might make sense (although if you have multiple circuits headed the same way, 32mm is handy). If it applies also to metal trunking, I can't see how it would work beyond the average sized house.

In the US you tend to see them around garage door openers and ceiling mount projectors. I was once at a building that used to be a pool table hall so they had outlets around the perimeter of the ceiling for Christmas/fairy lights. They also had some more switched circuits over each table and some sort of 240 drop that I found in the ceiling for some sort of Machine. My mom just got a long arm sewing machine that we set up in the basement and as part of fixing the wiring mess ( one of the previous owners got a little creative in the basement ) and redoing the outlets it became just more convenient for me to put a junction box in the middle of the room, that conveniently was just the right spot to put an outlet and drop a cord down for the machine.

Multiple circuits in a single conduit, sorts the men from the boys! Whats your thought on trunking with singles?
@artisanelectrics5 жыл бұрын
Yeah I figured it out but it took a while! Trunking with singles carries the same issue I guess, if the wires can be easily identified then it’s not a problem, but usually they just get slung in without a thought for the person who has to do fault finding or alterations a few years down the line.

In Italy multiple circuits in one conduit is the norm. To distinguish cables you use different colors, of course you must use green/yellow for ground and blue for neutral, then every other cable you use as you wish, for example to internconnect switches you usually use red, pink, etc, for differenct circuits you use different phase colors, maybe black for lighting, brown for sockets, gray for other things. A good electrician should also identify cables. Running different conduits costs a lot and is usually not done. Also differently from the UK multicore cables are never used, and we use only singles in conduits everywhere (more practical, since you don't have to rip walls to rewire something).

We're having an extension built which means the main external gas and electric points will be relocated. In addition we need to have the consumer unit relocated to that new wall. Thing is our room where the existing CU is is going to be turned in to a sensory room so with not wanting anything electric or hazardous feeding in to that room we would need to relocate the wiring. Just curious as to what is involved with this. Would the current "ends" (forgive my lack of technical terms) either be joined/extended and then routed to the new CU? Would they use the end to then link to a new light/socket/plug etc in the new build part and then just carry on the new loop? Or would this essentially need a full re-wire?

Having separate Conduit's for each circuit kind defeats the purpose of having Conduit, the idea of having one conduit that the wires can be grouped, upgraded, replaced or expanded. That being said they should definitely be labeled in some fashion to separate the circuits out. And with UK/Europe having ring circuits makes it way more difficult. I'm assuming that conduit had 1 ring circuit and one spur? In that case I really like what you did bringing it down in separate flex's that will make it easier for anybody having To do maintenance later. I was watching something and they said that they like to zip tie each circuit together into a bundle to sort of help group things at the ends.

When I look at Hager's website I get the impression of an established legitimate manufacturer of Electrical products. The details of the company registration are in the page footer. The product pages list lots of information on the products. When I look at fusebox's website I get the impression of a small and dubious operation. Information on who exactly the legal company behind the website is seems to be nowhere to be found. Information on the individual products is incredibly sparse.

The RCD must have taken a hammering due to the number of circuits? you do know an RCD operates on imbalance... so the number of circuits is irrelevant. false information and a clear lack of understanding show. installation at 33 years old... yet no comment of that PVC PVC cable is guaranteed for 20-25 years. Careful what you watch on you tube!
