It's still hard to believe that the English National Team failed to qualify for any major tournament betweeen 1970 and 1982. The English League had so many great players during the 70's. And I'm saying this as a German. 😉

England qualified for the Euros in Italy 1980 but were unlucky to face the Italians for 1978 qualification with only one going to Argentina with only 16 finalists. Similarly Scotland had great players in the 1960s but faced Italy for the 1966 World Cup qualifiers and West Germany for Mexico 70.

@@garrywood5345 especially in Oct 1973 against Poland at Wembley. Never mind those great saves by Jan Tomaszewski, the ref blatantly disallowed a Mick Channon equaliser for no apparent reason. And I think he blew the final whistle a few minutes early. The England players or Sir Alf didn't even make a big deal of it that night. 😯

This is half a century ago, not only was the commentary and camerawork better than todays gimmicky overkill, but the media of the day were prepared to give a second tier match half an hour plus of coverage.

@@PressureOnJulian A point well made, as live lower tier matches can indeed be accessed via any number of outlets .I was speaking more of the indifference of the likes of the BBC and the mainstream press who still have little interest outside of a featured elite. But well said.

Well they were under the deal that the Football League made with ITV Regions/BBC, that required a certain amount of matches from all 4 divisions.

Fulham there had a 40,000 capacity, that surprises me. Did they reach that with the Best-Marsh Roadshow or the FA Cup games that they had on their great run to the Final.

Great days! No personality refs, commonsense ruled (for the most part) play-on the normal cry, rarely saw diving (until Klinnsman arrived oh and Franny Lee did his bit), muddy pitches, one sub only.

Ref's then and refs now... some things don't change. Inconsistency in how to see a law, a foul and act the same. Those that use common sense in their decisions often show to be the best in games. They tend to see dives, advantages better and let the game flow. Hill once more talking some sense and then spoils it... but saying it's difficult for the referees to spot everything? I agree but in this instance, I will highlight the Casper booking incident that was 2 yards in front of him and he had a clear view. The same with the prior booking for retaliation. Mullery chopped the legs from under Casper... he did nothing about Mullery's taking Casper's leg from under him. Hardly safe practice NOR an attempt at the ball...yet Casper gets booked because he was angry frustrated and pushed Mullery... he knew Mullery took him out. Wrong I grant you... but pushing someone in general frustration is more of an issue than purposely chopping someone's legs from underneath them ( and Mullery's hypocrisy after the game?)? A good bollocking for that an a booking for a deliberate malicious foul. Now again what Hill doesn't point out to the viewers... is in my mind what led to Wents booking. Again a retaliation this time for on Casper's stamp in a tackle. But Hill doesn't even show Casper doing that. Casper was no doubt still fuming over what happened to him. Thus a chain of events because the Ref got it totally wrong. Common sense should have kicked in... booked Mullery for what he did to Capser, free kick to Burnley, bollock Casper for pushing Mullery and nothing else. Incident done. But no... all the ref did there was cause events to escalate.
