Btw, I rented a model y for a day from Hertz to see if I’d like it and I loved everything about it “except” the ride quality which to me was unacceptable for a $60k purchase. It’s just as you described. Way to harsh and rough. It had the 20” long range wheels on them. So now I’m debating an 18” or 19” setup right from the beginning when it arrives.
@TechnologicallyCurious

Thanks for the compliment, Jman. Means a lot! I would suggest 19s if you also want them to look good. To my liking 18s are too small. It is definitely worth that investment. Besides there is always someone who will want to buy your 21s that will save you some money.

Tire height is actually a ratio. 275x45 means 275*0.45=124mm. 265x50 is 265*0.5=132mm wall height. The total height (so wall height times two, plus rim size in mm) for the 275x45 tire is 730mm and 748mm for the 265x50 one. So on the 265 tires, the car will be 9mm taller, and the tire will be 9mm closer to the wheel arch.

Yeah I’ve had 4 Tesla P Models and I dislike the large wheels for real world comfort. My 19’s on my 2019 Model 3 Stealth Performance rode way better than the 20’s on my 2018. I agree about the Model Y P it rides hard as hell and it’s the first wheel I’ve curbed in my life😂. Nice 19”s!

Looks great, just some tips: Offset like you say is how far it protrudes, but you have to consider that this number really tells you how far off the centre of the rim, it mates to your hub. So how far it goes outward is very relevant to the rim width also, and this number is in millimeters. ET0 would mean dead center, ET10 means 10mm outwards. But since its about mating surface, the width of the rim is very important too, same with tire size. THe profile of the tire is as you say height of the tire, but this is a percentage number. 50 profile means 50% and that is then 50% of the tires width, so lets say you have: 205mm wide tire, 50 profile, it is then 10.25cm tall rubber. So often if you go from 20" to 19", you need to go up one level in profile to match outer diameter of wheel. Like 235/35-20=>235/40-19=>235/45-18. But if you go to a wider tire, since the profile (tire height) is % of the tire width, you then really have to calculate it to not get a too large dia diameter. In some countries it is legal to go +-5%, but not all cars can handle the clearance.

After all, people have slightly different criteria, some think that the Tesla 3 performance has too hard suspension, others think that it has too soft suspension, while the third category thinks that it feels like driving a go kart. they may have to do with whether the car is being compared to a soft sedan or whether it is being compared to a sports car

Awesome video! How did you configure tesla SW for the new wheels and tires? Tesla told me that if you set it to 19" in the service wheels setup, that is defaulting to the OEM 225-45-R19. I did exactly what you did. Same wheels and tires, so no way to tell it 275-45-R19. If you look at the revs/mile, the conversion factor is off. Tesla said no way to account for this.....yet. what did you do?

There are probably rims that are adapted for Tesla and of course there are also Tesla rims on the used market. there are probably even brand new Tesla rims to order. Otherwise, there are probably rims that have less air resistance than the rims you see in this video. note neither tires nor rims should be outside the wheel housing Consider air resistance

Hi, a quick question. I’m considering the 255/50r19 tires you mention, but I haven’t found one who says that the 50 tires match the MYP as the tire total will be larger than the 21” über turbine, leaving hardly any space for rub issues. Could you please comment on this? Thanks, really appreciate!

Yes, 255/50-r19 will fit. I believe the Michelin X-ice is a popular tire. But depends on the brand of rims you are going for. Make sure you check with them before buying as rubbing also depends on the offset.

The question is, however, whether the navigator can provide correct information with those rims. that is, how much battery you should have left when you arrive at the charging point. a tesla owner probably expects that if it says you should have 5% left when you arrive, he also expects it to be 5 or 6% Not 2 or 1%

I have done many long road trips including one from NY all the way to Florida Keys with these tires. Yes there is a slight difference of what the % is projected until the next charge which is absolutely common. But there are many other factors that also play a part for the difference like driving habits, outside temperature, wind direction, etc. I am about to finish a round trip from New York to Toronto and I can still say I have not experienced inaccuracies in projected range.

Coming from the Michelin PS All-season EV tuned OEM tires to these Continentals, how would you rate road noise? Especially after the tires were broken in a bit. Going with a different rim size will all depend on the brand you are looking at. Double check with them if the rim will fit. I have not had experience with 18s but the 19s I have do a great job with improving ride quality. If you are considering a bigger tire wire wall, you should also consider 265/50R19. You get big rims and more options to choose from and have the same wall height.

@@TechnologicallyCurious 265/50R19 doesn't sound right to me, as that's a much bigger outer diameter than the standard 255/45R19. As I want to preserve the outer diameter, the only way to get more rubber sidewall is to have less rim. I figured I'd get a set of 18" original Tesla rims from someone who upgraded their Model 3, and fit a new set of 255/50R18 tyres. Those should match the diameter for the Model Y.

Yes but you can do 2 things to make it work. You can just simply put a wider tire on the rear. You won't be able rotate them with the front ones but they can easily rotate them to both sides as long as you don't use a directional tire. The way I'm going to do it is, I will get the exact same tire and wheel for all 4 corners, then just put a 1 inch spacer in the back to match the wide wheel well in the rear. This rotating will not be an issue

I owned a long range with 20 inch induction wheels and I felt the harsh ride on it. I understand your reason behind going for 20s because you want to have a decent sized wheel that looks good but if ride quality is your priority, I recommended 19s. If you’re going to spend $$$$ extra on wheels you might as well get the satisfaction that the ride quality is better than just a slight difference which you may or may not be able to tell with 20s.

Great video, was wondering what you recommend if I have the standard Gemini? Can my tires be reused? Also I noticed your headlights were tinted. I want to do that mod but am scared of light visibility. What is your experience ?
@TechnologicallyCurious
@TechnologicallyCurious Жыл бұрын
Thank you, Niraj! The Gemini wheels are not a bad option. Now that you have so many design options on hub caps to choose from, the wheels can really look sleek and still be efficient. The visibility is slightly comprised but not to an extent that impairs visibility. I made sure it is a very light tint at 70%

hey does doing something like changing your rims cause any problems with tesla warranty?
@TechnologicallyCurious
@TechnologicallyCurious Жыл бұрын
Not at all. In fact tesla service offers to help you change to aftermarket wheels of you want to. If you powder coat the calibers that will definitely effect the warranty.

one thing I don't understand is, people are buying PERFORMANCE vehicle and after that complain about stiff ride ;) man... it's just comical how stupid some people are ;) I owned every American muscle car and few Europeans, and guess what! all of them are stiff! And why ??? because they have to be! ;) So please, b4 you buy any performance car, be sure you can handle all cause of PERFORMACENES ;)

3:50 offset. I think you got this wrong. You said "the lower the positive number, the more it protrudes out of the fender". So you're saying that a +40mm offset will stick out of the fender more than a +45mm offset... You got it backwards. The +45mm will stick out more.
@TechnologicallyCurious
@TechnologicallyCurious Жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment. Respectfully that is incorrect. +40 will indeed bring your wheels outside more than +45 does. The MYP’s rims are very wide at 10.5 which is why the offset is higher at +48 so that the tire does not protrude out too much for aerodynamics.
@theclutch19

Well darnit... you're right. I had a hard time visualizing "less is more" and the Tire Rack's pics were misleading in trying to explain offset. A wheel offset calculator website provided visuals that set me straight. My bad!

Dude sorry but you did many wrong. First: did not take in account your car is much slower now due to wheel being bigger radius per axle turn… two: consumption test did not take into account your tyre radius is bigger and your speedometer is off alot. Third: this messes up FSD

#1. I just hit 135mph on my road trip last week to Toronto. Would everyone generally drive that fast? I don’t think so. I find absolutely no difference with 0-60 btw. In fact owners of a similar wheel setup have claimed them to be quicker. #2 $#3 Maybe the radius of the tire might make a slight difference to the speedometer and range which was I haven’t noticed from my experience of owning it for more than year. But like said in the video for what I am getting in terms of better ride quality, lower risk of a flat tire, it’s worth it all day long 🙂

@@TechnologicallyCuriousell, i happen to have a similar lightweight set soon, but with original tesla 19inch tyres: 255/45/19. That (or smaller diameter) makes it faster. The way this works is: bigger wheel is heavier gear ratio, smaller wheels diameter is lighter gear ratio That difference in speedo being wrong makes it so safety stuff can be off a little in timing. I do like the wheels and your video quality but this stuff is important and get people on wrong foot

I understand your concern. Just to clear your doubts, I used Waze while driving and the speed on the app while navigating was exactly the same as the speedometer. I think you’re reading into it too much mate 🙂 Installing aftermarket wheels is not uncommon.

I'm a former Vehicle Dynamics engineer with 15 years in Big3. I bought a Model Y LR last month, and I immediately wanted to swap out the wheels to 17"(Assuming the brake caliper will clear). Ride NVH is horrible in this thing. GM or Ford would never sign off on setup like this. My model Y came with 19 inch "Gemini" wheels with 255/45/19 Pirelli Scorpion (BTW this is a very good tire, better than Conti). If I drop to 17", then 255/55/17 would be 100% matching OD but increase widewall height around +25%. This will solve a lot of ride NVH issue with no impact on the range. Do you know if there are any 17x9.5 rims for tesla?

Fascinating. I have a 23 Y dual with 19 inch wheels. We get sidewall cuts from parking. I'd like to replace our low profile tires with higher sidewalls to reduce sidewalk cuts.. Which would mean finding the correct size metal hub/wheel. But I have no clue how to do this. Thanks

That smaller rims weigh less shouldn't be a surprise, provided they are the same width or narrower and not made of heavier materials

Great vids. I'm thinking of doing what you did with 19 inch wheels and 275 tires. Those Conti DWS06 tires are not ev tuned, (ev tuned tires have sound foam and side walls are stiffer). Any issues or concerns regarding the side wall stiffness?
@TechnologicallyCurious
@TechnologicallyCurious 8 ай бұрын
Maybe you’re right about the tires not being tuned to EV but haven’t noticed any stiffness. If anything the ride was much softer even if it is nowhere comparable to the 2023 Model Y versions

My myp with 19 in Tsportline wheels with recommended & popular 255/45 size tires are fine performing but lacking looks wise. Im not liking the wheel well space / gap with this setup. Too much space vs the 21 Ubers. Going wider 275 and staying 45, will not address this. Can i go to 50? Any recommendations? @@TechnologicallyCurious

You can do 265/50-19. I have seen owners with this setup with no rubber issues. But keep in mind the ride quality on corners get hampered a bit when the walls are too soft.
