Couldn't be stuffed preparing for my Year 11 English Exam 3 weeks ago because of my Unit 3 NHT Methods SAC in the same week. Watched this video the night before. Pulled an A+ out of nowhere and the English department used my Argument Analysis Essay as an exemplar. TYSM. Gotta work on my text-response writing though.

I'm sure you're a lovely person, but VCE students please do NOT follow this. For over fifteen years, EVERY SINGLE EXAMINER REPORT HAS MADE IT VERY CLEAR THAT LANGUAGE ANALYSIS IS NOT ABOUT PERSUASIVE TECHNIQUES. As early as 2006, they were writing "these responses did not score well." - yours, a real English tutor/teacher/examiner.
@launatutors10 күн бұрын
Hey Joe! Thank you for your comment. I agree that language analysis is not about the identification of persuasive techniques - simply naming them is not going to help students score well at all. The 2023 examiner's report states "Rather than merely listing arguments, linguistic elements and features of the visuals, it is important to explain the ways in which the elements of the text were constructed to persuade a specific readership to embrace the idea of a music festival." The intention of the video was to unpack the linguistic element of language devices in greater depth, especially in context of authorial intent & intended effect. For students reading this: In no way does listing persuasive techniques replace a "sustained, purposeful analysis" of the entire text that takes into account of argument sequencing, visual/audiovisual techniques, author contention/purpose/context and audience, etc. However, understanding language devices is still extremely important. While watching this video, please focus on the act of unpacking language devices as it is valuable to deepening your analysis skills. 🫶
