I have rebuilt several wooden boats, but usually isolated areas ( decks and cabin cockpit and all the deck beams, carlens, boeworks, shear plank on a 52 footer) horn timber on a 28 footer, and floors on a 24 foot gaff cutter. The floors were the most challenging as I didn't want to disrupt the interiors too much. I made up a lubricant to take the place of tallow. One third beeswax ,to one third terpentine, to one third linseed oil. I lubed many things with this concoction even screws driven into white oak. When you make up floors they don't need to be made out of one piece. They can be layers which can be fitted over keel bolts much easier. If there is no keel bolt through the timber but two smaller bolts going into the keel timber that is the real challenge as they never run parallel to each other. If they are fastened with drifts just cut the drifts off and replace them later through the new floor timber. Cold wax. Heat beeswax in a mason jar placed in a pot of water the jar lets you see the amount of melted wax pour in the linseed oil to match the amount of melted wax and put back into the pot untill all is melted again. ThIs leaves one third of the jar to be filled with turps Stir until all is melted and well mixed and liquid again. No need for the water to boil, 170 degrees F is about right so as not to burn the bees wax I even use to pay into seams of the boat before launching it squeezes out when the planks swell causing no harm to the seams PS I sailed COMET the 52 footer around the world.

A bit late to the show, but the 'Screw Tip' on that auger is a hinderance on hardwood. Once you have a starter hole made, unscrew the tip and you can control the rate of penetration much better...😁

That’s great to know though, thanks very much for watching and for the advice! I’ll dig out the auger and have a closer look.

Now you've got your keel bolt hole drilled, sand the bolt then use grease to lubricate the fitting! Limber holes: use the same bit you used to drill the first limber hole from the other (back) side once the guide worm has penetrated the back surface. ie: turn the wood around and use the worm hole as the position for the rest of the hole!

That makes a lot of sense thank you! I will be sure to lubricate the bolt! Thanks for the support and feedback

It seems crazy to think I was trying to update you all 10 months ago. Covid has made updates very difficult as I’ve been unable to get down the yard! I have a big update for you though, this will be available in the next week or two. Website and blog is now back up and running, thanks for your continued support.

@@SVAndromeda That's good hear and keep up the good work 👍. I am about to start on my third project Boat which is a 1964 Keith Nelson 23 Clinker Cabin Cruiser.

If you rub beeswax on the drill bit it will cut more easily with less heating.

I’ll give this a try next time, thanks a lot!

The problem is not you but the drill bit it self. The screw tip pulls the auger into the wood too fast try holding back just a little, a forsner bit works well but to be long enough have a welder put an extension on it

This is a really interesting insight, thanks for all your comments and support. I’ll take these things on board going forwards!
