In this video I show the tools I use to build my 1911 projects.
I didn't show the drill press, but that is useful to have too. However, I have build one using a regular handheld power drill.

How similar is this list for when you are building a 2011? I'm assuming not much changes?
@MosinVirus
@MosinVirus 7 жыл бұрын
The list depends on what parts you get. Some parts are drop in requiring little fitting, others are custom fit requiring lots of fitting. You have to approach the list based on your needs, not just because I listed out what I use. I tried to be specific as to what I use the tools for to help people pick and choose what they need.

Hey MV ! Been following your build on 1911 forum, really nice undercut job on the trigger. As you know I picked up that 1911 kit and I`m impressed with it but I was wondering now that you`v had time to play with your 1911 builders SS frame how does it compare to your Springfield frame or any other 1911 frame you may have ? Just trying to get a quality comparison.
@MosinVirus

1911 builders frames are excellent. so far I haven't had any issues with alignment of anything. the only thing I have discovered is that wilson combat thumb safety didn't want to go into the frame tangs or the grip safety. I will open up those slightly. other than that, so fat everything fits into the frame nicely. I will be posting more pictures today on the 1911 forums. kind of excited with progress.

thanks so much for all your videos. they're really helping me learn about the 1911 platform and fitting it all together. I'm currently trying to build a tools list for a potential future build. My question might have already been answered in the comments or somewhere else, but what I'm wondering is if you had an estimate for the number of hours it took you to build. I'm honestly considering getting a rock island 9mm parts kit which includes everything but the frame and magazine as a practice build/ starting point, so If it's available when I'm ready I would probably get all the parts at once. I'm mainly wondering at what point in my life I might have enough time to build one since I've got a lot of stuff coming up.
@MosinVirus
@MosinVirus 6 жыл бұрын
I don't use kits, so almost every part needs to be fitted. If I worked on this 8 hours per day, I think I would build one in 2 weeks.

It all kind of depends on what parts come with a kit. If the barrel is fitted, you will not need the bottom lug cutter, for example. You will definitely need a plunger tube staking tool, some files, caliper, sandpaper, etc. power drill or drill press. It all depends. I am not familiar with the kits.

Very good video. Lots of information. Roughly how much is it for all the tools? $100? $500? Does Brownells sell them as a complete package or do I have to buy 40 different items?
@MosinVirus
@MosinVirus 7 жыл бұрын
Brownells doesn't sell these in a package. You may not actually need all tools. It all depends on what parts you get. While most parts will require fitting, some are easier to fit than others. For example, you may only get a drop-in barrel, in which case you may not need to fit the bottom lug or the hood of the barrel, so you may not need some of the tools. They are expensive and while I did get them over time, I think I have spent over $500 easily.

Many thanks for sharing, it is very useful !!! But, let me know your opinion, please about 2 more sear and hammer tools - Marvel Sear & Hammer Jig and True Radius PRO Stoning Jig from Harrison Design - are they critically important in some situations/manipulations, or they are interchangeable?
@MosinVirus
@MosinVirus 5 жыл бұрын
Both of those jigs are excellent and do very different things. A true radius sear is simplest and will make the trigger have a consistent weight throughout the pull, but the engagement of the sear and hammer (length of creep until the sear gets out from hammer hooks) will only be controlled by hammer hooks height. With non-true-radius sear stoning a proper fixture like the marvel one will let you set the primary sear angle (depending on angle the weight though creep can be affected) and the relief angle which can affect the engagement amount with the hammer hooks and shorten the creep.

I stumbled across these videos a couple weeks ago. They are outstanding! I'm going to jump in head first and do this! I'm sure I'll mess something up my first time around but I was a mechanic for 10 years and did a lot of custom work so I'm not too scared of some metal fab... This is a whole different animal though. Any recommendations on some good books to get? I think the hardest part is going to be fitting the barrel lugs and hood (mainly to keep the surfaces perfectly flat where they contact the slide and breech face), what part is most difficult for you?
@MosinVirus
@MosinVirus 8 жыл бұрын
As you can see from my videos, I do most fitting by hand with files, so the hood is not difficult, just time consuming. The sides are less important than the back of the hood obviously. There is a bottom lug cutter kit that is irreplaceable, in my opinion. There is also a video of me using it. I think the most difficult part for me is getting the perfect slide to frame fit. Many will argue that it isn't even that important, but when you are going for perfection, everything is important. As for the book... the one and only I have is Jerry Kuhnhausen Shop Manual Vol.2. Here is a link: www.brownells.com/gunsmith-tools-supplies/books-amp-videos/books/handgun-gunsmithing-books/jerry-kuhnhausen-the-u-s-m1911-m1911a1-pistols-a-shop-manual-prod13815.aspx. keep in mind though thst there are at leaSt two dimensional typos in that book.
@redline870

Thanks for the quick response. I am a perfectionist as well, ever aspect would have to be exact for me to be happy. My buddy at the shop used to make fun of me saying "we're not building rocket ship here" haha. I have also been checking out your Sig building videos, I may just start with that to get my feet wet before diving in to the 1911 as it appears to be quite a bit easier. Am I right in my assumption? Is the Sig build easier?
@MosinVirus
@MosinVirus 8 жыл бұрын
redline870 Yes, there is really nothing to it. Cut rails, drill holes, finish frame, assemble. Just don't tighten the frame to the rail cutting jig too much. Finger tight. That is if you are using the Matrix Jig.
@redline870
@redline870 8 жыл бұрын

@MosinVirus
@MosinVirus 8 жыл бұрын
+redline870 I believe they list the frame at $275, parts kit at $300 and I bought a couple of mags. the jigs is a one time spend but it can get pricey, though you can probably resell them without loosing anything after you are done.

I know this video is a bit old, but I was wondering what you recommend now, given your expertise, as the best way to fit a slide to a frame? I'm considering just getting a set pre-fitted from a manufacturer but unfortunately they don't have the slide I want.
@MosinVirus
@MosinVirus 6 жыл бұрын
Best way to fit the frame to the slide is to avoid lapping. A rail stoning jig can be used along with stones, and a rail file. You will need dykem layout blue to paint over the rails and dress down the sections where the slide removes the layout blue when you put it onto the frame. Do this until the slide can move all the way onto the frame. Then high grit (1200) lapping compound can be used to smooth out the fit. But it is better if you can avoid lapping completely.
@JohnDonne3PersonGod

of course aluminum is much softer and easier to remove, however it also makes it more difficult when blending with steel parts. so while steel is harder, it also doesn't scratch as easily, and it is easier to blend two same materials.

So I can buy all the parts legally, and build one myself?? If so is it less expensive than just buying one outright?
@MosinVirus
@MosinVirus 8 жыл бұрын
you have to check your local laws, you cannot be a prohibited person, it should be legal for you to have handguns... other than that, and unless your local laws would conflict, it is legal. ad for cost, it is possible to save by buying inferior parts, but in most cases you will spend more but get higher quality pistol. of course buying tools will push cost up.
@hydrus77
@hydrus77 8 жыл бұрын
I think here (Oregon US) its legal as long as its not automatic, you need a license for that, and you cant conceal a pistol without a permit. You can carry whatever you want but it just has to be visible. If its a rifle, you cant have it loaded, although you can still have ammo on you. Is there a way to get parts to build an AK? Cause I sold mine a long time ago and, it was an SAR-1 (romanian copy) loved it but now all I can find is the WASR-10.
@ScuffedEngineer
@ScuffedEngineer 8 жыл бұрын
+hydrus77 You can get the tools and parts (will be harder and more expensive as most people have bought up all the parts kits available, you might be left with underfolders) all online, but it's not cheap. Very doable if you have the will and funds as a guy in Texas is now a full time AK builder and he started as a guy building AKs for himself and people on Reddit.

So for those wondering the total cost for all of these tools without shipping or tax is $1478.66. If you add in the frame and slide we come up with 1848.66 .So depending on your choice of internals and finish you want the gun to have I would say all said and done barring no mess ups on your part that the build will cost anywhere from 2-4k all said and done. edit: this is allowing for any extra tools needed eg. sanding stones etc
@MosinVirus

MosinVirus I do have one question do you think it would be worth it to pick up one of the x-2 mini mills like yours especially if I’m going to build more than one frame yet don’t want to spend 3k for a used bridge port. I did some machine courses in college, so all I’ve used were industrial sized machines not sure about these smaller mills.
@MosinVirus
@MosinVirus 5 жыл бұрын
@@derrickrussell89 I got mine for free, so for me it wasn't a decision. They are capable, but I would instead go with a fixed column and larger table one from LittleMachineShop if i wanted a small mill (what I will be doing in the future, then converting it to CNC) and if space was an issue. Unlike jigs (rail cutting, decking, etc) a mill can do everything and better, and a large mill will be just much more capable. So, if the decision is whether to buy tools for just 1911 or get a mill, I would say get the jigs and sell them when done. If you will do more than 1911s, buy a mill. If you have space buy a large mill. The heavier and sturdier, the less vibration, the cleaner the cuts, and the longer the tools will last.

Really enjoy your videos. Is it possible to get the job done well without all those specially jigs/tools from Brownells? I have the matrix precision 1911/Sig combo rail cutter, decking jig with drilling fixture, barrel seat cutter, files of all sizes, lapping compounds, and hand drill. The kits i'm looking at are from both Stealth Arms and www.thebuffalo.us. I really value your videos and teaching style and could use some advice.
@MosinVirus
@MosinVirus 8 жыл бұрын
Well, yes, of course, but it all depends on what parts you get. If buying a kit, with barrel that is a drop in, and most other parts made to fit, you can bypass using some of the tools. Some hand fitting may still be needed, of course. I would have to see the kit in person, and try to build one to know for sure.
@buendiagaucho83
@buendiagaucho83 8 жыл бұрын
Yeah that makes sense. Both Companies kits claim they have great fit, but need to actually have it in hand. I just buy as I go. Do you feel the matrix rail cutter has improved the quality and ease of making the rails? I'm asking because in your more recent videos I don't see you using any lapping compound, instead more stone files, reg files and the cutter. In other you tubers channels they rely a lot on lapping compound. I also have the Sig p228 kit coming. Thanks for the relpy.
@buendiagaucho83
@buendiagaucho83 8 жыл бұрын
Oh one more thing- are you getting your frame serialized when you buy the frames? Don't know why I'm asking you probably have a laser machine in your living room...lol. Thanks again.
@MosinVirus
@MosinVirus 8 жыл бұрын
I am trying to stay away from lapping compound in the future. Without it you can get a better fit with no risk of any lapping compound embedding into the frame (especially since the frames you are getting are aluminum). Lapping is a quicker and dirtier way to get there, files and stones are a slower but cleaner way, in terms of having more control over what material is removed. There is also a difference between lapping to smooth or loosen the fit, vs to fit. What I have noticed is that by the time you get to the back of the frame while lapping to just get the slide on, the front of the frame rails will have already been opened up quite a bit.
@MosinVirus
@MosinVirus 8 жыл бұрын
No, simply because that was not available when I was buying the frames. I also don't know if you have any control over depth, position and size of engraving, and what if I also want to engrave the other parts? I don't have a laser engraver, but I go to a local engraver to get this done, and have the freedom to choose a bit more. Though I think it is a great addition and for most people (without an engraver close by) it is a perfect option.
