So much better than the pop music nowadays. No bad language, nothing suggestive, just a sweet little song about rowing a boat ;)

Having watched and enjoyed the story of Vernon and Irene Castle (1939) recently I was inspired to find out what I could about the music used which took me to discover this super little piece of musical history and a wee delight it is too.

"Row! Row! Row!" is a euphemism for sexual intercourse. Just listen to the lyrics.

Ah, 1912. Women (and blacks) couldn't vote. Liquor was cheap, plentiful and unregulated. Child labor was not only legal, but strongly encouraged. Dirty coal was the chief source of power and residential home heating. Spousal abuse was always the woman's fault. The income tax was looming. And songs like this could be highly suggestive as long as they weren't explicit.
