It's surprising that the Beatles' music from the 1960s is still consumed in real time, but Charlie Chaplin's movies seem to be the only examples of entertainment from the 1910s being consumed as actual popular culture rather than cultural historical documentaries even after 110 years. When I was little, my great-grandmother just had to shout “LIFT”, and the lift came down automatically but a few years later, they changed it to a model where you had to push a button to call the lift back down. I was sure that technology goes backward. After some 40 years, while visiting a house with an ancient lift, I learned that, in the case of the oldest lifts, the previous user had to push the “send back” button for the lift to return to the ground floor, otherwise it stayed up there until someone could… shout loud enough “LIFT” and the previous user finally came back to send the lift back down. That had been, single-handedly, the longest standing magic of my fading childhood

I worked as a teacher for a few years, and Charlie Chaplin pretending to comply with the request he move to the side, by doing that just for a very short period of time each time, reminded me of my students who upon my every request they be quiet would do so for one or two minutes, and then resume interrupting me each and every time. Teachers are not paid well enough to deal with those "tramps" :)

It's interesting how, even with the film speed reduced close to normalcy, Chaplin's movements are still as distinctive as a dancer's. It's more like comedic ballet than conventional clowning.

This is wildly meta. All the bystanders are fascinated with the camera, and Charlie is playing with that idea. Acting out for the camera in subtly funny and awkward ways. It reminds me of being a kid in the 90s when someone would have a VHS camcorder on and I'd immediately play up for it, back when being recorded was still kind of a novelty.

What I notice here is how full- blown the Tramp character was right from the first film. Harold Lloyd's "glasses character" went through several phases/evolutions before becoming full-blown, but Chaplin had him from the get-go.

This not authentic colors of the period. Men did not wear all-blue suits with matching blue hats. Chaplin's famed tramp outfit is on display at the V&A museum and is a textured grey coat with gold cuff & collar lining, silver-grey tie, white shirt and black derby-style hat. This is why I've always been apposed to colorizing.

Wow, clear and smooth as the day it was released. The added color is great. His Essanay films would be great with color, making them easier to see. But, HIS films wouldn't do with color. As in the Gold Rush, Modern Times, City Lights. They were designed in BW. They just need copies to be struck from new prints. They have an 'other worldly' quality that color would ruin.

Software is guessing the color but it's still computationally too expensive to keep track of every person and item throughout the film and make sure picked color stays consistent. Instead, every second or two software will try to guess the color of objects again and again. This technique is called neural network colorization and it's different from how films like Casablanca were colorized in the past. As far as I'm aware, with this technique there's still no way to tell the software that you're 100% sure that Chaplin had brown pants and have it stick to that, for example. But it's only a matter of time before will be possible too.

It's interesting - and mildly amusing. But mostly it's just kinda irritating behavior on display. But, we in our era will never be able to see it with the fresh eyes of 1914. I've read both Chaplin's autobiography as well as David Robinson's mammoth Chaplin biography, and they both mention that this film was basically Chaplin and his 2-camera crew horning in on a public event to ham it up for the cameras. All of Chaplin's early films are this sort of improvisatory creation where you go to a location and see what you can make from it. You can see elements of his later Tramp character, but it's quite embryonic. I guess he hadn't yet stolen Roscoe Arbuckle's pants.
