The director is Ladislas Starevich/Wladyslaw Starewicz, a Polish-Russian director who also made animated films. He left Russia after the October revolution and established himself in France where he continued to make films. He died in 1965.

It‘s creepy and hilariously funny. The „ghost“ from the picture slowly creeping out of the frame. Then he casually sits beside the table checking what’s inside his bag. Seems a little worried he forgot something and contemplating like someone who is overthinking a shopping list. Then he simply leaves without a word. Thank you for loading up this document of film history!

It seems that the painting's owner is have sleep paralysis nightmares! I'm not a big fan of silent films, but this isn't bad! Better and scarier than most Hollywood horror films! I think it inspired "The Night Gallery"!

This could've been a Twilight Zone. Only at the end the guy in the painting puts the person who bought it, inside the picture and brings him back to the store lol.

Great restoration however in this case I would love to have seen the original also since some parts are really distorted and its though to determine if its the restoration algorithm or its the movie.

Great film. If you enjoyed the vibe I'd suggest reading the story, "The Judge's House" by Bram Stoker. (It was published the year before this film)

I think there are lots of double frames, every 4th or so, so it is not really 60 fps. This is the norm. I've seen one channel that gets rid of them.

Perhaps because the young man bears a faint resemblance to him? The film also relies heavily on figure movement and expression, which is a similarity they both share.
