I like that what you are calling a quick an dirty way is what most home machinists would call elaborate since most would simply grind a form tool with part of the radius on it and step it around the corner or even hand blend an file the radius but you have gone the extra mile as I would have done ..Nice work !
@WinkysWorkshop3 ай бұрын
I've done the form tool thing... something that large doesn't work too well. But yeah, a file would have cleaned it up.

Thanks Mark, I think on the original drive you had to stop the drill press and move the wheel. So this drive is a bit more user friendly. I'm guessing the modern rubber on the drive wheel is a more durable material as well.

Very nice mechanical variable speed drive. A quick and dirty knob turning was very elaborate compared to my dirty lever actuator I made for a barrel switch for my Atlas 618 lathe. No it was not a small vise grip, but that did work for teasing the lathe.

Years ago I contracted in a shop that had a similar but much larger drill press. I don't remember the makers name but that thing was about 8 - 9 feet tall with a 30 inch throat and the casting indicated it had been built around 1907 in England. It must have weighed close to 2 tons. Originally it had used a flat belt drive but somewhere along the line someone had adapted a three horse motor. One major difference was the variable drive system. It had two disks about 2.5 feet in diameter, one above the motor drive and one below. The upper disk had a bearing in the centre of it that rode on the shaft and it was a slip fit so it could move up and down freely. Above that disk was a large spring that pushed it down so it would ride firmly on the rubber drive wheel. This arrangement ensured a very positive drive which was needed since this drill was rated for up to 2 inch bits at it's lowest speed. The quill itself was a number 4 Morse taper. There was also a mechanical auto feed that used a cork clutch and an arm with an adjustable weight to control the feed and pressure on the bit. The table was adjusted for height with a worm drive with a crank. Initially, using it was a daunting proposition but once you learned how to set it up and use it, it was a good reliable machine. When the company closed it's doors that press was headed for the scrap bin when a farmer who worked there offered to buy it along with all it's bits for $200.00. He took it out to his farm shop where, according to his son who inherited the farm, it still remains working today. Imagine, 117 years old and still working like a charm. Some how I don't think the Chinese crap that they sell today will be around that long.
@WinkysWorkshop3 ай бұрын
That sounds like a huge drill press. Mine is a 1918 so its old. I always wanted what they call a Jig Bore. They are like a mill but for drilling. The table is on a dovetailed column.

Good morning Mark, Excellent work creating the ball turning attachment. Those handles look original. I would consider screwing the plate on instead of sticky tape. Heat makes them come loose. Four brass screw would finish off the project nicely. Now that this project is done, what is coming next?

Question Mark, on those cam bearings, could you add some nylon bushings on the bottom of both of them from bouncing and making noise. ????
@WinkysWorkshop3 ай бұрын
Yeah, I also thought about putting a brass or nylon spacer behind the where the speed indicator bar. I think it would hold the yoke straight. I'm slightly concerned about the end of the cam follower wearing. I think they only make noise while changing speeds.

Whats about the Spindel runout?
@WinkysWorkshop3 ай бұрын
Haha... I was going to go edit the intro but never got around to it. Yep, still an issue. I was not sure if it was a bend spindle or worn bearings but now I think it is both. It's going to be hard to address. The bearings not so much but the spindle is a little more tricky. I think the bend is above the quill tube. Apparently this will be a separate video. You are the first to ask this... surprising.
