Excellent find. Things simply aren't made like they used to be now. Amazing how accurate it was for the age. Looks very 70s too - I like it.

Yes and still bright.. i was reminded when checking the temprature(with my finger) of the resistor they are running on 150 Volts :))

@@TonyAlbus Nixies (like any gas discharge tube) need a voltage above their steady-on voltage to ignite. Their "ON" voltage is indeed clearly above 100V. I remember designing and building an electronic calculator (4 digits!) in the very late '60's using nixies. They were "leading edge" tech at the time. In the "OFF" state, (ISTR) about 110-120V was applied continuously (stabilised and via a resistor). To switch a digit on, about 60V was applied (again, via a high-ohm (several 100kOhm) resistor) "on top of" the 120V. The 180V was enough to light the digit. Reducing back to 110-120V extinguished the digit. This was all done to be able to only switch 60V, instead of having to switch the whole 180V. It must have been 180V, maybe a bit more, long time ago... The SN7441, which is probably used in your counter, wasn't available or affordable at the time.

Hey Tony, weer een mooi exemplaar toegevoegd aan de collectie zie ik. Ik moet ook iets gemist hebben als ik zo naar de achtergrond kijk 🤔😉Juntek, lichtkrant, geheime boodschappen 😂

Tony that is a fantastic find. We used to use some later Racal Dana DVM's similar to that but led. That is amazing how accurate it is.

Those resemble the 5900 DMM, which had an LED display. It makes me wonder if the 5900 ever used nixies at one time. I''m a Racal Dana fan, and have a lot of it on my bench. My main RF generator and two-tone generator are made by Racal, and I'm looking at trying to find the matching frequency counter.

Racal Dana makes great stuff. i think i sill have this one, it is for sale.

There are two Dana units for sale near me at the moment. One is the Dana 4700 Digital Multimeter and the other is the Dana 8051b frequency counter. Both with Nixie tubes and fully working for $300 Canadian. Don’t know whether to pull the trigger on both as there’s little information about them and so I’m worried I could be throwing money away. Thanks for the video.

Hi Richard, i just did a (very) quick search, the 4700 i can find information, the 8051B i did not even find a picture. if it is fully working, i guess the price is good, 300 for both together. if it is 300 each it is to high for my taste , if there is no docs and should be in very good stat then.

@@TonyAlbus Hello Tony and thank you for the warp speed reply 😊 Yes the$300 price is for both units. I’m a rookie in the electronics field and just wanting to build a work station to help me along. Just retired and wanting to get into the hobby, with very little knowledge of these older bits of equipment I don’t wish to be parted with good money on something that may be to outdated. I have recently purchased two Tektronic Osciloscopes, one is the 466A in full working order, the second is the Tektronic 2210 needing surgery but is a project and something to cut my teeth on, so not worried if it’s a lemon.

@@richardshort4587 Hi Richard, well it is a bit out dated, but if it works it is usable, i have these old devices for fixing and collecting, i use more modern equipment to actualy use. If you like newer equipment you can have a look at Owon or Siglent that is a lot better affordable then Agilent or Keithley. last are better but it all depends on budget for sure.

Hi Tony, Nice instrument and very nice find! Can you find the brand of the grey (TTL) chips? They don't seem TI, which was the most used. I've been able to discern the writings on some black TTL made by Motorola but none of the grey ones. BTW, that oscillator is not in an oven (OCXO) but temperature compensated (TCXO), so no warm-up time. These models can be found in many (Tektronix) instruments of the day, like e.g. counters (7D15) and time marker generators (TG501). Because of their age, most have stabilised quite well by now... Amazing that the one in your counter is set so accurately!

@@TonyAlbus Hi Tony, so that's National Semiconductor! The grey packages suggested Sprague, who also at one time made TTL and were notorious for their failure rate.
