I am so grateful this video was posted. We're restoring/preserving our home that was built in 1925. The architectural design is extremely similar to this house, and it was a great help for inspiration

My bro is a craftsman carpenter. He was working on a 17 century colonial home occupied by a local college president. She directed him to paint the original built in bookcases white. Nearly 400 years old and she wanted to paint them.. My brother tried to talk her out of this, but she insisted. Btw, she was the president of a major art school. This is appalling contempt for architectural history. From an art historian no less. Sheesh.

Great details and quality construction. I wish more architects and builders would realize how important it is to construct quality buildings today. I know cost is a concern, but quality doesn't cost... it pays! Just like this example of a 1920's home.

It's remarkable that the windows are constructed to appear like hinged casements, which they would be in a Mediterranean house of this style, where sliding sash windows are hardly used.

Interesting to see the similarities and differences between this house and the Spanish Revival homes here in the San Diego area. Very few are brick, but have stucco instead. Arched doorways, wood floors, gumwood doors, built ins, and trim as well, though there are a variety of 'sub' styles. I see a cut glass mirrored medicine cabinet door. I love the metal pieces that hold the curtain panes over the arched windows. Window coverings on that shape are always a challenge. My friends have a huge arched window at the front of their house, and custom ordered a Moroccan-style screen for it that opens like shutters. Your tours are always fun.

While being a Connecticut Yankee I understand the ‘It’s my house. I’ll do what darn well please to it” attitude, but it almost makes me sick to see people tear out high quality stuff because it’s old fashioned and replace it with expensive junk. My old boss’s father was a mason who had dozens of marble fireplace surrounds stacked up on a vacant lot. He had been paid to remove them when they went out of style in the 1950s. They wound up getting buried when my boss put up condos on that lot, probably 5 or 10 years before they came somewhat back into style

Does anyone know what wood that gum is for the staircase. I’m in Australia, so wondering if American gum is different to our eucalyptus? Cheers

Yes, we have Eucalyptus as well. It is an American Sweet Gum wood. It is also called Red Gum. It has been our experience that it is tough to get good quality red gum today. Too much sap wood.

The problem with all this is that no one person can maintain it themselves. You always have to rely on an outside expert/craftsperson to do anything. It's expensive and logistically tedious.

@@BrentHull Yes, I understand that completely. I am greatly affected by it too when I walk in a classic home or building. For a single man such as myself it's too much weekly responsibility even just dusting the ledges/edges on the millwork, for example. For me, I prefer living in a 400 square foot rectangle with one to three large built-in pieces at the Brent Hull level and that's it. A small yard for edible plants with a water feature and sculpture, and a separate 250 sq. foot workshop, and a two- or three-sided carport ...
