Could an average tennis player today beat this guy? Not a pro, just an average tennis player you see Saturday morning at the courts?

Beat Big Bill Tilden? Not a chance. There are unverified reports that in 1931 his serve was clocked at over 150 mph (obviously not with radar - possibly measured using a movie camera and counting frames). But by all accounts he really smashed the ball. Assuming equal equipment (everybody uses wooden racquets), I think Bill would destroy the average Saturday player without any trouble. 🙂
