If Gorbachev had imitated Deng Xiaoping's reforms, it is likely that the USSR would not have disbanded and would still survive today.

It’s possible, but I wouldn’t say likely. China did not have the nationality problem anywhere near the same extent or federalism which made it such a potent force. That’s what ultimately tore the USSR apart.

24:18 Did Stalin care about anyone else? Ukrainians or anyone? What were his priorities?
@davitka_p

It’s actually very interesting. In 1929-1930 he made a speech. That the USSR was 50-100 years behind and they needed to modernize in ten years or they will be eliminated. So the focus for the next two 5 year plans was purely on military and industrial might. If that meant feeding the massive new force of factory workers by taking grain from starving farmers so be it( Soviet mentality, the ends justify the means) the crazy and scary part is that Stalin got it right. Ten years later and a couple months the Germans invade. If Stalin wasn’t so cruel and dead set on his goals for the Union it would’ve fell like a rusty barn door. He single handedly saved the nations future by creating small scale catastrophes across the USSR over the years.

@@davitka_p Stalin and the Soviet leadership acted quite rationally in terms of preserving the Soviet Union as an important state and also increasing its influence in other regions (Europe, East Asia). On the other hand, this was combined with a cruel attitude towards the Ukrainian minority and other vulnerable groups of the population which belonged to ethnic minorities. As an Ukrainian who not have much sympathy for Stalin, but also for the current global capitalist system and imperialism, I would like to say that my antipathy towards Stalin is based not only on the fact that his policies caused great demographic costs in Ukraine and because of due to stalinist politics ethnic Russians preserved some privileges that they have had since the times of the Russian Empire, but also because as a reaction to the excesses of Stalinism, Ukrainian politics and culture shifted too far to the right. Of course, this is largely motivated by the egoism of the Ukrainian rulling class, whose collective interests are not combined with any principles of equality and real democracy which led to empowerment of common people. This is also due to the destructive ideological influence of Western countries that impose on Ukraine a model typical of countries on the periphery of the capitalist global system. Nevertheless, the real crimes of Stalinism are indeed a factor here. I would like to share these reflections that will disliked by both defenders of the Soviet Union, Russian nationalists and "pro-Ukrainian" Nafo liberals whose political line is consistent with the political line of the Ukrainian rulling class.

Because at a lot of points it tells a narrative without giving out all the facts. The one I noticed where still to this day is disputed if Stalin would’ve ever instigated a war if the Germans hadn’t. There’s nothing to say he would beside conjecture. Stalin had interestingly positive relationship with Mussolini who once stated that the Soviet Union under Stalin is just Slavic fascism

The millions that died during the Russian revolution and Civil War was so sick but the ones that were killed after the Civil War was atrocious but when Stalin came into power, he had at least seven or 8 million Ukrainian starved in the 1930s so that he could industrialize. He purged thousands of his own officers in the military because he was paranoid and had them killed and had thousands of other Soviet party members killed and probably during the 30 years he was in Likely slaughtered 50 million or more people than Chinese communist party under Mao allowed 48 million to starve during the great leap forward and about that same number killed during the cultural revolution in the 1960s and communist redeems are just pure evil and mass death

Ohhh no!!! in the beginning of this video, they were talking about the government trying to survive and the military,the navy, mutinying and the truth is THE MILITARY WERE TOLD Just like everyone else in the Soviet Union that after the Civil War, they can have elections, and these people had lived under an imperialistic system, and even though they did not like Nicolas II, they did expect to have another government that they would elect and they wanted a constitutional monarchy, which was something they didn’t wanted for 100 years and when the Soviet Navy started talking about elections is when they were all executed

From all this history, when you touched on Afghanistan, it didn’t occur to you to mention Operation Cyclone by the CIA, which all along trained and armed the Mujahideen to fight and organize against the Soviet Union. Probably because it doesn’t suit you today to talk about how the CIA directly contributed to the creation of radical Islam, which later split into multiple factions, one of which is Al-Qaeda, the group responsible for 9/11. If you’re going to present history, then do it INDEPENDENTLY, and not just by presenting facts that work in your favor.

Communists was the first terrorists in history which takes power like in modern Iran, not without help of Baltic foreigners estonians & latvians (Lenin personal guards) which fighting legitimate russian government and local army to install that virus into neighbor. Ironically they still don't understand karma which returned back to them in WW2 from the people they installed and still Baltics are the most complainers of their own historical crime. Lenin lost his elections in Russia parliament, he wasn't popular at all, so they just killed everyone and ruled by arms for next 70 years.

@christophermarriott1681 i agree but would say 'extremist' fascism from opposite sides. Socialist values have been propagandised by the west from the late 1800s to make them sound like a bad thing. When in reality its a 'soft' variation of communist values that fit into any model becauseits an economicmodel nit a political one. For example most nations have free healthcare, running water, electricity and basic essentials to survive, its simply a matter of if its free or semi free (subsidised) or non existing (pure capitalism) and these can be in a democracy, a communist governance model or even a tyranny or royalty (warlords making the name same better by calling themselves royalty). Social ' ist' values are present in virtually all of these governance models, mainlybecauseyouneed them for humans to thrive/survive.
