This was the first of three "Flash Gordon" serials produced by Universal, based on Alex Raymond's legendary Sunday comic strip- the first released in 1936, featuring Buster Crabbe, Jean Rogers, and that most dastardly and hissable of all movie villains, Charles Middleton as "Emperor Ming" {"Flash Gordon is doomed!!"}. 15 unforgettable chapters of non-stop action, stock music from "The Bride Of Frankenstein", unbelievable sets and costumes...a screen classic!!

For everyone who complains about the effects remember without Flash Gordon there would be no Star Trek, Star Wars, Guardians of the Galaxy, Avengers, or any other Space Opera/Fantasy that we know today. The actual comic is far different from the films, with a world that feels like a mix of Star Wars and Lord of the Rings

The STOS "mugato" from "a private little war" was apparently ripped straight from these Flash Gordon episodes.

Seeing as how Television was not invented yet and the hallmark of entertainment was the radio, yes...they didn't have much...that does not mean it's awful. Imagine the same thing being said by a kid 50 years now to transformers the movie.

Wow! Flash Gordon puts Captain Kirk's fight moves to shame. He has more than mastered the art of awkward-grabbing fu!

SusanMcboot To be honest Buster Crabbe would've probably made a decent 1930s-50s era Captain Kirk

I loved the way their rocket ships kind of jerked along and backfired as they went. And Dale Arden in the first one (the blonde) was the best screamer. Better than Fay Wray.

Well, I remember movies nearly 40 years ago (Star Wars) weren't too shabby, even by today's standards. I doubt that much will be different 50 years from now, or even 500 years from now in movies; there's only so much you can do with special effects. This Flash Gordon serial was truly awful, however. (Was anyone scared by that kid's pet iguana @1:11? LOL!)

AWFUL. Just... awful! It sure didn't take much to entertain people back then. They apparently thought people in the future would wear tights and fight with swords. (I wonder what they'd make of a modern Renaissance fair?)

The film standards were differnt back then. At the time it was merely a couple of decades since the birth of the Cinema and sound film hasn't been around so they experimented with story telling in films so they were less complex compaired to today. If you compair Disney's Snow White with Moana, you'll notice how different they are in story-telling, art, animation and humor. Not saying that Snow White is bad, it will always be a beloved classic for many reasons, I just want to point out how far movies have evolved in the last hundred years since The Lumiére Brothers invented the film projector. But for some people you can't compair the classics and not all remakes and reboots are great, just look at Ghostbusters compaired to the reboot or the 70's King Kong with the original.
