I would lay on my back for an hour to admire the chassis ( I don't think there are more than a handful of people who could turn out that level of workmanship today . I'm now 72 and Duesenberg and Packard are still my favorite cars , yeah Ferrari , McLaren < Lamborgini are cool but , . . . Many will recognize this as a gorgeous automobile from a bygone era, but to truly appreciate it, you need to have sufficient knowledge of the period to be able to frame it through the correct lens. Masterpiece isn't even the word for an automobile such as this. It is the physical iteration of masterful engineering well before its' time intersecting with true design and artistic talent to create something that just can't be produced in the current era. Most of today's "luxury" is still just mass-produced, "bling-bling" garbage designed to create an enormously inflated corporate profit. Cars such as this Deusenberg were created by corporations to serve the customer and exceed their expectations in every possible way. It's still running strong and, with proper care, can hold its own in daily traffic 100 years later. No car produced today at any price will be able to make this claim 100 years from now. Thank you for sharing this wonderful and amazing automobile with us, Jay.

When my generation is finally gone, you will have left a most valuable record of all these gems. Thank you for taking such good care of this part of our history. Edited for spelling.
@mrdanforth37443 жыл бұрын
In the movie Some Like It Hot the gangland killers in the garage showed up in a Duesenberg. In reality, I think the St Valentine's Day Massacre involved a Lincoln which was the car favored by the Chicago police. The gangsters wanted to be taken for the law until it was too late. So they used a Lincoln with red light, siren etc like a police car. Gangsters usually drove Cadillacs, I don't know of any who owned a Duesenberg although it is possible. Most of the original owners were wealthy industrialists or business types, in other words self made millionaires. Those with inherited wealth preferred Packards, or if they were really loaded with old money, Pierce Arrows.

Jay, you mentioned the man that made new heads for the Duesenberg J and the parts the Bentley Owners Group produces for their cars. Well, in the Model A Ford world, we have mechanical genius by the name of Terry Burtz that has engineered, and is now in production, a brand new Model A block and crankshaft with full pressure oiling and five main bearings. This is a huge step forward for those of us that drive our cars. After having suffered metallurgical failures on rebuilt 90+ year old cast iron blocks over the years, it is amazing to have new blocks and crankshafts available, New camshafts and heads are also now available so in effect, a Model A restorer can build a completely new engine with modern improvements producing an engine that will last much much longer than a rebuilt original Model A Ford engine. I would love to see you do an interview with Mr. Burtz and the group he has worked with to produce this amazing engine which by the way, on the outside looks like an original Model A block. Always a treat to see the underside of a Duesenberg J!

My four door 2008 Lincoln town car is only 117.7 inch wheelbase compared to this two door at 153.5 inch wheelbase. 2.983 a hair off three feet. I'm glad you mention adding on or upgrading the rear lights to L.E.D's on all your antiques so they can see you. I get a lot of people saying keep it original don't upgrade the lights your wasting your time. So if someone rear ends me the first thing they say is I didn't see you. Thank you sir for showing this 1931 Duesenderg.

Man, look at the paint job on that thing. Like a mirror!

Thank You Jay! I seriously doubt that the beautiful car is worth a fraction of what it cost you. The attention to detail makes it possible for us to see a lost piece of automotive ART and makes you a fabulous Historian IMO

So AMAZING to see an old car on a NEW road! It looks out of place, yet stands out among all the other look-alike cars. Thank you, Jay, for all you do!

Jay, THANK YOU. I've always heard that they were the best in the world. Shame they aren't still around. I love the solid ka-chunk sound when closing a door. EXQUISITE

Those PANDEMIC VIDEOS appealed to me more than the structured crew videos. They had a certain honesty and simplicity to them. Not that I do not like all your videos, Jay. Thank you for your wisdom, sincerity and entertainment. God Bless You, Jay leno!

So good to see Jay being on camera making content he is truly passionate about. My father was a car guy, to an extent. I grew up playing/inspecting Hot Wheels. Some of my favorites were the Duesenbergs, Auburns, and Cords. Put an aircraft engine in a car? Sign me up. Wish I had the time time to really dive into cars as a hobby. Or aircraft, really.

So this is essentially a "new" Duesenberg? No wonder Jay drives it a lot. Who wouldn't? 3 Tons of Fun!

Thank you for driving all of your cars (even some really old and tricky to drive ones) and not treating them as static objects. It is a shame other Duesenberg owners don't maintain and drive these beautiful automobiles.

I can't speak for everyone but I love Duesenberg's , and the fact that you drive them as opposed to being museum pieces or trailer queens makes you the man you are Mr. Leno. Augie & Fred are probably watching your channel from wherever arguing about who designed what :) Lol....
