1931 Studebaker Dictator Regal Sedan

A review of my Canadian built 1931 Studebaker Dictator Regal. Are there any others out there that were made in Canada?

"People don't know what hand signals are anymore" - truer words were never said. I use them when I ride my bike, I use them when I am moving farm equipment down the road, I use them when I am driving my old Jeep which doesn't go much over 45 mph. Until about fifteen years ago people responded to them, but in the last few years they either don't know them, or ignore them.

Driver education is horrible in America. I never attended a school to learn how to drive so I can't judge it too well but that says something on its own, doesn't it. People don't need to get driver's ed if they are an adult (in Ohio). All you need to do to get your permit is to pass a quick & easy test and pay them 20 dollars. I simply studied a little bit using a booklet from the BMV and I do remember them talking about mechanical turn signals (with the hands). I grew up in Germany and it's common to see bike riders using them all the time but in America, you don't even see motorists consistently using their electrical turn signals.

Interesting & well explained about the Stude. Like all American cars of this era, they were robust , durable, able to be worked on by owners & stylish. I drive my Model A Ford using hand signals & find people do know as they are still part of the road code here in NZ. I do not drive it in fast, conjested traffic. If drivers in Nth America dont know hand signals, they are ignorant of the law?. Cheers from NZ.

Hi from Nova Scotia. Yes drivers here are also supposed to know hand signals. Many don't even seem to understand the electric signals and how to use them.!

I always wondered why Stude. named a car "Dictator"? The Rockne I understood. Champion & Commander too. My late Aunt dated a guy who drove a Dictator. Unfortunately, that was in 1940, so it was pretty much considered a "flivver" by then. BTW: I am originally from So.Bend so seen a billion Studes.

They settled on "Dictator" when they tried "Serial Killer" with a focus group and they panned it.

This car is so old that it basically pre-date the concept of dictatorship, back then it was suppose to mean that the car dictates the market standarts. They would later realize their poor choice of wording and discontinue the model name.

I have a ‘31 Model 54. Do you know if oil filters were optional? I can’t locate it. The owners manual says there is one but I’m at a loss to find it.

My parts catalogue doesn't cover the model 54. On my car it uses a Fram C4 element. The filter housing is mounted on the left (driver's side) of the engine. The top of the housing is almost even with the top of the cylinder head. It may be the model 54 didn't have a filter from the factory.
