1935 Duesenberg SJ Speedster "Mormon Meteor" -1

This is one of the most influential cars in American history, designed to break the 24 hour (and higher) speed record (and other records) and hit speed in excess of 150 mph. It used a V12 Conqueror aviation engine to get these speeds and then after retiring for record making, got its special tuned Lycoming Straight 8 supercharged engine (400HP+).

The owner is the guy that walks up to it at about 3:30 in the video. Harry Yeaggy of Cincinnati. Also owned the James Bond Goldfinger DB5 but sold it recently.

A couple of years ago we were driving down to Canberra for an All American pre war rally and a Deusenberg V16 two seater went past us doing 140kph and it sounded like it was doing 1500 rpm.

as far as I know, Duesenberg never made a V16, they only made Inline 4s and inline 8s.... they did make a W-24 for a boat application...

When it all became a quest of making the biggest profit, and sidelining any new inventions, making "quality cars" becomes irrelevant. Sadly not only the car industry has seen this, Bill Gates and his Microsoft has taken this to the logical extreme. While this is not exclusive to US auto makers it became particularly serious there. Another reason is that big three in Detroit muscled out all the American competition and with them a lot of great names with good ideas.

When the Great Depression arrived in 1929, vast fortunes evaporated and super-rich people who could afford cars built up to a quality, rather than down to a price, simply were no longer there. Many great marques of the 20s and early 30s simply vanished. The carnival was over.

I watched at least 15 Duesenberg's leave the Meadow Brook Concours one year. This is the only one that went fast. Most of them popped and farted like a moose full of chickpeas.
