Takes me right back to when we bought this 1936 bungalow in the 80’s, especially the slightly odd shaped rooms huge bay widows and narrow bathroom . It was 2 bed when we bought it, but in the 80’s we ( my ex) put 2 bedrooms and an en-suite bathroom in the loft with a rear-facing dormer ( at the time the council didn’t allow dormers at the front, but I’m glad now we hid it at the back ). With the expansion of our family in 2005 we added a rear extension to add a 4th bedroom . We paid £82,000 ( about double our joint yearly income) and it’s now valued at £570,000- it’s no wonder young adults struggle to buy their first property now!

That bathroom and kitchen was once somebody’s dream of style and modernity ! Such a great opportunity to see an older home largely untouched. I agree with other comments - please don’t strip all the original features as these are what make it special. Good luck !!

Oh someone once loved that garden very much. There are probably still some gorgeous specimen trees in amongst all the shrubbery. It would be wonderful if you could keep some more established trees to give the garden and house a more nestled in perspective rather than turn it into a concrete jungle! I think a garden and house need to work together and I really wish people would look at how gardens really do add to a house and determine whether it looks fab or meh! Good luck.

@dogsbody494 жыл бұрын
I agree. You need to live with a garden for at least 12 months to see what is growing, what good points there are & what bad points. So many people have the builder mentality where there clear everything with no understanding of the plants or layout of the garden.
@jimbailey37054 жыл бұрын
Looks like there are some nice rhododendrons in that garden... it probably needs heavy cut back of bushes and deweeding. Some trees might be salvageable, but depends on if the trees are healthy.

Aw reminds me a bit of my grandma and grandas little house with the drive way down, they've both died now. And their house had alot of work to do, because when they got older they couldn't manage and so it deteriorated alot, but everytime I went there after, it would just make me cry. They lived their all their lives. I will always love you grandma and granda 💗

The bakelite door handles are valuable. I grew up in a 1936 arts and crafts house with exactly the same door handles . I retained some spares after my parents sold the house. I sold the handles on line as the are sought-after. Good luck with the reno. You can also sell the kitchen units as people like those.

I’m from the states, bought a lil house a few years back, vacant for 2 yrs, bushes took over the yard...EVERY day after work I’d cut & cut & cut...found a huge rock pile that I used for plant beds, etc...found so MANY perennials, that I just transplanted every year all over the yard, found berry trees, cacti 🌵 & all kinds of stuff in the garage they left! 👍 I’ve noticed over in Europe, many, if not all the houses are so chopped up, as in, so many separate rooms...no open concepts...that would bother me! You couldn’t really talk to someone in the dining rm or living rm while cooking in the kitchen 😔 I like that open concept is part of your plan!! And because of that I joined to follow your journey!!!! 👏👏👏

@Bobrogers994 жыл бұрын
A project with lots of potential! I will add my voice to other commenters on two things. First, please examine the back garden carefully before you start cutting. You should leave worthwhile specimen trees and shrubs, which would take years and years to replace. On US TV, HGTV renovators too often rip out all the mature plantings and replace them with spindly things that leave the yard looking bare. Second, the place has some 1930s features that give it a period charm. Respect them. It has some pokey little rooms that need to be combined, but don't get carried away with the "open plan" fad. Not everyone wants their kitchen exposed to guests coming in the front door. Your neighbor seems to be using their garage as a garage, though I admit yours is quite narrow for that purpose. You are planning a very ambitious extension on the back, but that deep lot has room for it. I hope you will post videos here periodically so that we can see the progress.

Love the fireplace in the first room. Hope you don't destroy too much of the original features. Please, please, don't destroy everything in the back yard. Once cleared, it would be a lovely place for young kids to play. In South Africa we can apply for planing permission to sub divide a large property which enables someone to build a house in the sub division. Which is usually a smaller house or granny flat for the parents or a younger couple starting out. Can this be done in UK.? Looking forward to following you on this journey.

Interesting project Nick of a now endangered species - ' bungalows ' !..I have seen os many of these quaint , charming homes swept away and over development replacing them ,often through greedy developers , totally out of kilter with the surburban area they stood in .Its ' provenance ' of one - owner occupancy is remarkable in itself and actually adds to its appeal .Although in need of a great deal of work , your plans seem perfectly sensible, but try not to make it ' sterile ' , it has some wonderful Art-Deco features, the doors and door ' furniture ' are lovely and very ' on trend ' at the moment !.Also , don't compromise on the quality of the window design , so many of these properties are ruined with ill-proportioned cheap ugly windows as they are the ' eyes ' of the house.It will make a wonderful and desirable new home with care and imagination .

Agree, sounds like the plan is blow away everything that makes this bungalow unique in favor of increasing square footage and value. I don't have the heart to subscribe to this channel and watch this happen. I live in an 1883 bungalow that had one family ownership until the early 1990s and it has been left largely intact with many of the original features, which is why I bought it. When I sell it, as some day I must, it will be sold to a like minded individual, who wants to preserve it.

I’m glad to see that someone is almost as mad as me... I’ve just taken on an old stone Farm House in Wales. There’s less to do in the house but not much less. The garden however is probably about an acre of trees that were supposed to be shrubs, shrubs that used to be weeds and pretty much in the same condition as this one. Should you feel like things are getting too much pop along and take a look at my vlogs 🤣😂🤣! They’re intended as a bit of a record for myself and to show friends what I’m up to as we’re scattered across the UK and the US... so don’t get too excited 😉. I’ll be interested to see your progress!

value what you have as others have stated, not saying you have to live with the wallpaper and carpet! but, between the mouldings, fixtures like the door handles and hinges, and all those mature plants in the garden, reuse what you have and work with what you got, it will add more value to your home than you think. it's a very unique home, I personally wouldn't touch more than you have to, else it'll look like everything else these days. in the long run, you might also appreciate the little extra effort you've invested!

That's when you can get off the radar in your own back garden. But I agree with other comments, keep some of the more prominent trees and shrubs. The house in itself is a journey back to 1960 I believe, those kitchen cabinets and cupboards belong in a museum, not seen this 1950s style for a long time. And indeed, the boiler must be pre 1970, my house had a 1979 boiler when I bought it and that was looking much more modern, I bet that thing weighs a ton!
