Hey John, I am so pleased I found your You Tube videos. The best part is that I can refer to them as I go along with my own restoration. You've shown how a badly packed, broken up radio could be repaired and made to look like new again. You've taught us to look beyond the ratty cabinet and rusty chassis to see a diamond in the rough and what's possible with patient and persistent work. Those of us who made the journey now realize the possibilities that others may ignore. All the best, Tom

I actually like the battle scar looking glass as is. I also appreciate the way you explain how and why you use certain products to finish a cabinet. Great job Mr. John!

Hello there. It's good of you to drop in...and I much appreciate the good comment. I had never heard of a PT-6, so I did a quick Google. Nice-looking unit. I'm sure you'll do well with the restoration. I'm also very glad to hear you'll be using a voltmeter and ammeter when powering up your radios. Those little jewels are extemely important. So many times I read where someone completed a repair only to have things fry again. Good luck. Regards, John

Nice job on that abused old cabinet, John! Very nice restoration and repair. Especially impressed with the repair of the front of the cabinet where the speaker tore away.

Thanks, my friend. I should have never had to make that grill work repair. A totally stupid seller caused all that extra work. Fortunately, it turned out ok...not great, but ok. I play that radio almost every day.Regards,John

WSM was the perfect ending, Looks and sounds just great! I really like the original appearing dark colors, and it was great to see how you achieved that with the lacquer etc... Thanks for taking me along. This series has started me in restoration and I thank you for introducing me to this great hobby. Tom B.

John: I just wanted to let you know how much I've enjoyed your restoration of the Zenith and the Philco. A great big thank you for boosting my confidence on tackling a restoration. I'm diving in to a PT-6 Restoration as soon as I can complete my bench. While waiting for my last piece of equipment (an RF generator) I've completed the cabinet restoration. with your tips, I think it may look better than when it was new. I even bought a wooden box from Hobby Lobby for my Volt/Ammeters. :)

Turned out very nice, I'm always impressed with the way you make the chassis look like new. Can hardly wait for the TV project. Jackie Gleason is on MeTV, along with other vintage TV programs. Sunday night I'm always up til 3"AM watching Route 66, one of my old favorites, and never miss those 30 minute Gunsmoke series on every afternoon.

Hello John, enjoyed the series and appreciate the effort of sharing! Refinishing is a huge effort in and of it's self and you videotaped, and narrated your progress and we got to be entertained and educated by your effort, thank you. I'm a trying to restore a 1933 Silvertone 57DM 1711 Worlds Fair set, the cabinet is solid but the finish was ruined, I just finished using Formby's re-finisher to strip the remains of the old finish and have discovered that this set has three different colors of wood...It looks like walnut, cherry or mahogany and another type....(I don't know wood types). There are a few little "chips" in the veneer and repairing the veneer is what brought me to your series...I watched all nine! B.W.

Thanks for this series John. I've just begun with this hobby, having picked up an RCA 811K and Philco 40-180 floor consoles. This is exactly the kind of DIY series I needed to gain confidence to do this restoration myself. I think I'm going to start with the Philco, as its cabinet has more "character" than the RCA. The RCA I may simply cap and clean and leave as-is. It is in real good shape. Thanks again John. What's for dinner??

wouw! That is the cleanest restoration job I have ever seen! I learned some good tips from this, I wish I had enough patience and time to do that good of a job, I just refinished a Philco 38-C4 radio, considering it is the first floor model I have redone I think it turned out ok, and a number of people have said it looks nice but your work looks so much nicer ^_^

Hey John, There's a fellow named "SmoothOscillator" on the Antique Radio Forum selling in the Radio Classified section, some metal tags, and glass dials. One Philco dial may have the piece of glass you need. The dial looks similar, but is not exact to what you have. The glass may be exactly what you need. Take some measurements to be sure. Cost is $12.00 plus shipping. Tom

Hey there...was that the Crosley 666 that just sold on ebay? If so, I'd been watching to see what it would go for. The winner jumped in at the last minute and wiped out the bidding field with a single blast. :-) I'm very glad you like my vids. It's much appreciated. Be sure to keep us informed of your restoration progress. Regards, John

This was a very scary radio to me as a 3 year old. My Aunt Betsy had one. The cabinet seemed hunched up compared to the Grandma's cathedral. But the worst part was the dial. It looked like it was daring me to touch it, so it could bite my finger off. It was hard to stop looking at.

Tell ya what...strip only the top and start again. Afterwards, if the stain still looks good, give the top a coat of the Minwax Pre-Stain Treatment I've used in my vids. If you've already done the pre-stain treatment thing, then skip that step. Then buy a couple cans of Watco brand clear gloss lacquer and re-spray only the top to see what happens. If you can get the top to shine...the rest of the radio will follow suit. Best I can do. Good luck, my friend. Regards, John.

Thank you, my friend. I sorta specialize in trying to restore super-ratty, chicken coop radios. So far I've been lucky in that all projects have been successful. But it's not necessary to go to the same extreme as I do. It's just a matter of personal choice. Thanks for popping in. It was greatly appreciated. Regards, John

There is no reason and / or way you would do this at this stage, but just a thought for future reference, if it appeals to you, I think the screw heads would have been more stunning if they had been painted gold, brass, or copper. Isn't it great that we can all agree to disagree? Anyway, keep up the good work and again, thanks for the Johnny Dollar bit, I love Your's Truly Johnny Dollar!
