1937 Allis Chalmers Wheel Replacement

In this video I change out an extremely rusty spoked wheel for my 1937 Allis Chalmers WC that had rusted out over time due to calcium. It was so bad that the inner tube was pushing it's way through whenever I would air it up to move it around. I also start the process of cleaning rust out of the gas tank to prep it to run again. I hope to have this ready by the end of the month of April to take it to the Old Time Plow Boys Spring show and plow day as the unstyled tractor is the feature tractor for the show. A huge thank you to my friend Tom who had given me the ambition to start working on it to be able to get it out to shows which is what my intentions have been since I purchased it in 2017 from the estate sale of the former Allis dealership I worked at in my late teens early twentys. Awesome tractor RJ! Brings back memories, my Dad had a C Allis Chalmers and we would turn the wheels around to widen it out for cultivators. They were fluid filled and horrible to handle. I remember he always said he wished it was a CA with the spin out wheels!😊

The tractor project looks to coming along nicely. My thoufht on it is preserve the tractor as is, keeping it touched up until you are ready to restore it. I would, when the opportunity allows, to get the period correct decals for it asap so you have them when you decide to respray the tractor in the correct hue. Wire wheels on a tractor are really cool looking.

I like to use some gravel and some strong degreaser/water to get the rust and varnish out. Then rinse it and let it dry. Then I put some sandblaster sand and bbs in dry and shake it around to get it really clean and get rid of any flash rust. Then I blow it out good and rinse with gas or kerosene. I'm up by Wilkes-Barre and Allis Chalmers tractor were rare around me mostly IH and Ford with John Deeres here and there.

Thank you. Everyone who is leaving tips are really appreciated. I also got a tip yesterday in person of putting a donut style magnet around the outlet to the sediment bowl to catch and future rust particles too. The last time I had done this, I used nuts and bolts and got a lot out. What caused it this time is the coating stuff I got from Napa them, apparently didn't work and I don't ever fill the tank with gas as It would go to waste with how little I run it. Guess that means I will need to fill it and leave it full this time around to hopefully help keep the moisture out.

Looking good RJ. My uncle had a post WWII Allis, not too sure of the year (late 40's). It was a true workhorse, ran it till he passed away. Silly question: Do you put never seize on the lugs? I've heard mixed opinions. Can't wait to see it running 👍

😉👍 Use nuts, bolts,ball bearings... Water and muriatic acid with water 1:20 to 1:10 at the most. To get your rust out. You could start out with just nuts and bolts, ball bearings and some diesel, if you're leary of using acid. I throw the other good tank on the tractor, block up the back end up. Strap the original you're cleaning tank to one of the tire and throw it in gear and let the tires spin around with the tank on there tied to it, so it can do all the work and clean its own gas tank, 😜👍 lol by letting all those nuts and bolts and ball bearings clean all the rust out of the inside of the tank by knocking them around. Make sure you use baking soda and plenty of water to flush and neutralize the acid. There are several different gas tank sealers on the market... so I'd just go with a good one, I'm not saying Eastwood is bad but there stuff is always pricey, if you ask me. 🤔 I never done a tank on a tractor... Just a motorcycle... But it's painted John Deere yellow, lol does that count?

Thanks Justin for the input. I definitely appreciate those tips and will give them a try. I did use the nut and bolt trick the first time I did that and it worked pretty good. I do have plenty of garden tractors that I could strap the tank to, or perhaps even Old Blue 🤔 lol. I haven't checked on Eastwoods prices yet but will definitely shop around. And if JD green counts to you, then sure, it counts. Lol.
