If it needs all that high speed cranking, it obviously has something vital wrong with it. It would be far better to fix the fault. Perhaps he's maladjusted the carby jet or the magneto timing is completely wrong. Or he's doing something stupid like trying to cold start on kerosene. With correct set-up, these will start on one good pull up on the hand crank after turning the engine over 2 full turns with ignition off.

If it won't start with the hand crank it needs a tune up.. My Great Grandfather supposedly had an English Fordson and My Grandfather said it was better.. Seems the American Made ones are F Model and N Model ? I am guessing the N Model is never..

Properly tuned and on these settings they should start first or second time. ((Fuel taps off. Radiator blind closed. Drain the float chamber. Turn fuel tap to petrol & make sure you closed the drain cock on carburetor. Main jet on carburetor 1 & 1/2 turns open. Full Choke with Ignition OFF. Throttle 1/8 to 1/4 open. Engage starting handle Lift Up 4 times. Choke 3/4 closed Turn ignition ON 3/4 Retarded. Engage starting handle and pull upwards smartly. When warm open main jet to 2 & 1/2 turns. Fuel tap To Kerosene. Adjust the timing and Adjust the radiator blind to suit the load on the engine)). Taught this in the late 1940's. They are fitted with an "Impulse Magneto" to aid hand cranking. Some models have a removable plug in the intake to prime the intake with petrol in extreme cold weather..
