modeling fashion of the era.... at the car show, theres a "fashion" part of the show during the awards that have women (and the owners who are driving) "model" before the owner picks up the award. I don't really care about that part of the segment but its interesting.

Gorgeous car - too bad it had a wheeze - master motor under the hood. This car was a supercharged straight 8 but with a dismal 180 hp. The same year Duesenberg straight 8 put out nearly twice the power - 320 hp. Their ad said it all... The Duesenberg Straight Eight "The Power of The Hour."

who cares, the Mercedes was a luxury roadster with a powerful engine for the time, not a dragster. No car can match the sheer class and engineering of the 500-540 ks

@@qwertyman9560 - And the Duesenberg was the most luxurious, most expensive (by a very large margin) and the fastest American car, and not hardly a dragster! Was there a Mercedes in 1935 that cost $20,000? I don't think so. The car had features not found on any other car in the world. Automatic chassis lubrication from a dedicated resevoir every 4,000 miles, which a dashboard light confirmed. It was the first car with with hydraulic brakes. Its beautiful engine turned dashboard had every instrument you could think of, including an altimeter. The only place the Mercedes outdid the Duesenberg was in the chassis. Its 4 wheel, coil spring, fully independent suspension was superior to the Duesenberg's uninspiring leaf spring straight front axle and solid rear axle. I have said before that if you took the chassis and suspension of the Mercedes and put it into the Duesenberg, you would have the best of both vehicles. You say the Mercedes had a powerful engine for its time. Maybe compared to other Euro luxury cars, but its engines were far less sophisticated and far less powerful than the Duesy's 420 cu. in double overhead cam engine, also supercharged like the Mercedes, but putting out a solid 320 HP. Both cars are exquisite, but my choice would have to be the Duesenberg for its overall quality, sophistication and its exclusiveness - they made far more Mercedes than they did Duesys at that time. World famous Hollywood actor Gary Cooper's Duesenberg SSJ, one of only 2 built, sold at auction 3 years ago for $22,000,000, the highest price ever paid for an American built car ever at auction.

@@Loulovesspeed A car is much more than just its price or power. If that's the case, the Bugatti Veyron or Chiron would be proclaimed the greatest car ever built! Its a combination of good design, engineering and innovativeness. You made a point about the suspension - which is exactly why I think the D is a dragster, the independent suspension meant better handling in the corners not just straight-line. Also, you got to look at how the cars feel while driving, the linearity of the power plant, stability of the vehicle, responsiveness, passenger comfort, etc. Some of these are of course subjective but all things considered the Mercedes is a superior overall car.
