I unbox a very nice 1937 proof set with a mintage figure of only 5,500. Also a quick flashback commentary by Howard Ruff talking about precious metals and his legacy.

I just watched this again because I love looking at beautiful coins and these are gorgeous! I wish I could change my mind about the '37 Indian but I can't. I know I miss the obvious for no reason sometimes but I am stymied on this one! Will someone -- ANYONE! -- please tell me what is dictating the grade of 67 on this gem nickel?! If you have to start at 70 and deduct from there for imperfections, what imperfection is knocking this coin down? I fail to see it -- will someone kindly point it out to me? I'm waiting patiently.

This is like a history lesson and Christmas all rolled into one. The history of the coins adds so much to the set. I have a question: do you have to remove the coins from the original holder before submitting them to be graded?
@Dr.G
@Dr.G 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks bud, who doesn't love Christmas. LOL. Yes, All the coins are put into 2 1/2 X 2 1/2 plastic flips for grading. All raw coins that is. If you buy a modern coin that is in an airtight you can submit it in the original holder and they will return the plastic holder along with your slabbed coin. Also it's possible to send a slabbed coin for cross over or regrading with out breaking it out of the original slab. If it crosses or upgrades they will break it out and reholder it. If not they will send you back the coin in its original holder.

If I had the original packaging from the mint It would definitely have some more value, but the capital holder that I got if from wasn't the original mint holder anyway. But I do like the original 60's capital holder better than the PCGS slabs. Thanks for the comment.

Glad you're happy with the grades. I would not have been -- I thought they all deserved at least a full grade higher despite the weak strikes on some. And I thought the Buffalo could bring a 70. Of course, I know they'd never give it a 70 even if every grader in the world and every computer said it was a 70 -- just because there haven't been any 70's and only two 69's up til now. Wouldn't you like to know what brought that coin down to a 67? I sure would. Or maybe you saw something wrong that I didn't. One thing sure -- you've got a great attitude.

hahahah. Love the play by play. My favorite set. I love the half. The color is aqua, and all is well except the boneheads at the mint polished half the sun rays off the die. Oh well... As you said the Indian is just amazing, I don't see a thing wrong either. Beautiful coin. I'll never forget how I got that set and how excited I was. That set really pushed me over the top into numismatics. If I had to sell everything I own that would be the last piece to go. Great memories. I vote for 70 as well. LOL

That makes sense. It's also true that in some ways I'd be more interested in a proof nickel from this year than a proof half dollar. How were these originally packaged? I would guess it wasn't that cellophane packaging or whatever that they used in the '50s and '60s.

This was the last year of the buffalo proof nickel, which is kind of cool. The coins were originally packaged individually in cellophane sleeves, stapled together and wrapped in tissue. The original packaging is extremely rare.

The nickel is among the finest I have seen. My guesses were all spot on except for the Penny, which I thought was 65. I am going to record a video with all the coins I am sending to ANACS during their May special. Would be honored if you subscribed

Already subbed. Yea, that nickel is just crazy, I love it. This set is one of the best things I own. I really enjoy it. Did you really get that walker correct? I had no clue. Can't wait to see your stuff.

How much was the set before the grading?
@Dr.G
@Dr.G 3 жыл бұрын
Can't remember exactly, maybe 11 or 12 hundred. The coin dealer offered the seller very little so she sold it herself. Thanks for the comment Paul.

PCGS doesn't give the FB designation on proofs, which are expected to have it anyway.

The half seems over graded and the penny seems under graded. I bet 68 on the penny. Really surprised.
@Dr.G
@Dr.G 6 жыл бұрын
Richard Forester Yeah Richard. I thought that as well at first but after looking at the half and looking at many many others I now agree with the grade. It is really a nice piece. It has a great light blue tone that is just fantastic. And the fields are flawless. One of my favorite pieces. And the penny is also a beauty. Thanks for the comment.

PR 67 on the half!!!! I've seen DMPL's nicer. SELL IT!!!!
@Dr.G
@Dr.G 4 жыл бұрын
My favorite coin. True collectors never sell. 😀 You keep the DMPL, and I'll keep my PR67. LOL It could be graded PR110 and I'd never sell. Eventually I'll break it out of the PCGS holder and mount it in a custom made holder with the other coins from the set. By now you probably can guess that I don't care much about the grade or the monetary value. I just love coins, and history. Thanks for the comment. Ken. 👍

5,500 set is small ?
@Dr.G
@Dr.G 6 жыл бұрын
Just for reference. In 1956 the U.S. mint produced 1.2 million proof sets, in 1962 3.2 million sets, and in 2005 2.2 million sets. 5,500 is extremely small. lol Thanks for the comment.

Pre-1968 proof sets were just in cellophane packaging, which don't protect the coins well at all and could even damage them if left in too long. You don't really want the original packaging for any proof sets before 1968. Even back in the 50's and 60's before TPGs were even a thing, people would carefully take them out of the packaging and put them in hard plastic holders to protect them better, especially those made by Capitol.
