1938 ZUNDAPP K800
This is a stunning 1938 Zundapp 4-cylinder, horizontally opposed, side-valve air-cooled engine K800.
It is an incredible bike. The art-deco styling is amazing and the build-quality is outstanding. This was a no-expense spared restoration a number of years ago.
The motorcycle was featured in The ONE show in Portland in 2013. It also took first prize for best European motorcycle at the 2015 Columbia River Concourse event.

Back in the 70's, a friend's father had a great collection including a similar aged Zundapp in military green, dressed out in full military outfit. It was shaft drive, the kick start was sideways, a really interesting piece of work. I've not seen one in all the years since. I was completely taken by surprise with this one, absolutely gorgeous!

An Art-Deco motorcycle! Wow, that is gorgeous. Very different aesthetic to the more, dare I say it, masculine British styling of that era. Now here's another one for you to try and organise a test ride. A short documentary on the bike, features, specs etc would be interesting too.

A superb restoration ! Even in 1938 this must have looked very old fashioned, it looks very 1920s but with an elegance, with a rigid frame, and the flat engine it must be a real handful when you give it a rev. Looks very nice.

I remember there were Zundapp 'mopeds' & lightweight two-strokes around in the late 50s early 60s in the UK. I checked on line a little of the history surprised to find; 'After long test drives with the BMW and Zündapp prototypes the Arms Checking Department was convinced that the Zündapp KS 750 was far superior to the BMW R 75. Looking at the cylinder heads I presume it's a side valve engine? Certainly an easy starter, I dare say those twin sparks help. A bike that oozes quality from every angle.

@@TheMightyGarage: I've just re-read the header and realised it's not a twin spark, it's a 4 cylinder! That's amazing for the period. The only other flat 4 I knew of was the original Honda Goldwing engine.

Dear sirs! This is a typical engine design of Richard Küchen. There was nothing to compare at the times before and after WW II in Germany. But fuel supply and engine cooling didn’t touch him too much if the design was fine. For example have a look to the Victoria Bergmeister. He ordered everything behind his georgeus aerodynamic engine design. So the durability needed always a little attemtion. I am proud to own a Zündapp KS 601 with a TR 500 side car. Also a Küchen designed engine. Not so fancy as its extreme designes but well working and at its time stage of the art. No cooking pots for the the air filters like at the bavarian bikes. And the engine sound beats all the english bikes at this time in my oppion. And with with real 28 Ps ( not Hp!) and 44 Nm on the crank shaft it was the real green elephant on german roads and BMW needed at least 5 to 6 years more to get the same performance. But BMW was supplied by bavarian politians and Zündapp not. The rest is hystorie.

It was just the idle. It was the first time that carburetors were refitted and the bike had started in a long time. It just needed a little fine-tuning, that’s all

aThis Zundap k800 are the only 180 degree flat 4 engines ever made. They are not boxer engines they are 180 degree V4 engines, you can see how small the engine is for an 800 look how close the sparkplugs are together. Everybody today will tell you a flat four like this will not work it will have too much vibration.

Just touch the kick starter and it starts, creating a very hazardous condition, starting willy-nilly when totally unexpected. Something should be done to make the Zundapp harder to start.
