That pitching drill with the windows reminds me of that old GE commercial with Bob Gibson

This is the best spring training film I've ever seen. The slow motion is impressive.

Terrific film of the 1939 Chicago Cubs in spring training. Mentioned are Gabby Hartnett, catcher who was known for his "homer in the dark", Dizzy Dean, Dick Bartell and Bill Lee.

I was a baseball photographer for ten years with the Angels organization. I met many retired players from the thirties through the 70's. I'm always amazed by all of the unseen facts such as this. I never even thought that the Cubs did spring training on Catalina.

I grew up in L.A., and I've been to Catalina a number of times, but I never knew exactly where the Cubs' field was. I FINALLY know, and this video helped a bit (I believe that's the country club overlooking left field). Going back to L.A. for a visit next week, and just for fun, I'll be taking pictures of the old spring training sites of the Cubs (Catalina wasn't the only place in SoCal they trained) and several other teams.

I didn't know that Dizzy Dean played for the Cubs. I knew him as a Cardinal

Dizzy Dean had his productive seasons with the Cardinals (1930,1932-37), but by the time he was with the Cubs, his tenure as a pitcher was about to end due to a fractured toe.

The voice over narrator sounds like Andre Baruch, famous radio announcer for, among many other shows, "The Shadow".

Oh my Lord. I absolutely cringed when I saw that catcher, Gabby Hartnett, receiving that pitch with his throwing hand out in front like that. I realize that the gloves catchers used back then were not hinged and his other hand was needed to keep the ball from falling out most of the time - but still...Oh My God. LOL still an enjoyable video. Thanks and keep em coming.
