What a gorgeous, nostalgic film, just taken to record a holiday, but now a walk back in time, love the South side, in all honesty its all about the same, except of course the outdoor pool has gone, apart from the hair styles the Clock cafe looks just the same, thank you so much for sharing this film with us.

What get me are the fashions for the women. In the space of 20 years women's fashion had gone from full on Victorian long dresses and massive hats in 1919 to scantily clad bathing suits in 1939. The dramatic revolution in dress is quite amazing.

Colour movie film was phenomenally expensive in 1939 - probably two or three times the price of black and white, after processing. I think this is 16mm film, which was already very expensive and generally out of the financial reach of most ordinary people. This amateur photographer must have been either wealthy or very committed. From the appearance, this was early Kodachrome, which came out in 1935. Check out some of the colour movies done by Eva Braun. She used Agfa colour film. Not as good as Kodachrome, IMO but good nevertheless.

I have always assumed that he was part of some slapstick clowning act that seems to be in this part of film. There's a parade of ladies in swimwear (which may have been something to do with my grandfather, since he was a director of a ladies fashion brand) and then the man in the bra appears to be getting in their way. There is also a diving show a little later that also features some clowning.

Not sure exactly when my grandparents first went to scarborough, my grandmother was stationed near scarborough during the war, at an internment camp. I was an incredibly special place for them, many a wonderful holiday spend there, I know they stayed in the grand hotel, somewhere I took my family to share an experience from over 60 years previous. I remember sitting in Pacitos some time in the 80's enjoying a knickerbocker glory when my grandmother remarked of sitting in the same ice cream parlour during the war... Ah the memories... Wonderful, wonderful film. A great slice of social history. I know the summer of 1939 was especially hot and one that the British holiday makers could get the most from. Good job too with what was just around the corner. Shocking to think that some of the people in this film well have been bombed out or worse killed in German bombing in a little over a year's time. Moreover some could have been killed on active service overseas.
