Fantastic podcast. Really well researched, informative and entertaining. When they cover, what one might feel, are well known events they always have information and data that I had never heard before. They did a recent series on the Titanic and that was amazing

I learned about D'Anninzio when I was studying the actress Eleanora Duse ...she influenced many actresses in Europe and US....she loved that man and supported his work.

Super excited to hear the rests take on this polarizing character. I'm not a fan of the man, but I'll concede that he may have been a substantial artist.

D'Annunzio received a brief mention in history at school when we covered Mussolini and the rise of Fascism but that was all. A most interesting podcast.

39:00 Trieste was not occupied by the Austrians. Trieste was Austrian, since 1382. That is more than 500 years before d'Anunzio came and dropped leaflets from an airplane. The few Italien irredentists in the town were in the absolute insignificant minority. The majority of the Italians in Trieste were pro-Habsburg, pro-Austria, even during the war. And the non-Italian part of the city's population was even more.

And yet it was Italian for hundreds of years before that, not counting when it was part of the Roman empire a thousand years before Austria or more accurately, the Holy Roman Empire. Go figure.

After 7:20 ... D'Annunzio contribution to the fascism of Mussolini: - militarism - extreme nationalism - élitism - anti-democracy - manipulation of the press - theatricality, sense of politics as a performance art

I would propose Charles Maurras, the leader and theorist of Action Francaise, as the first Fascist.

I've read that d'Annunzio's state of Fiume was the first state to formally legalize homosexuality ?

Plausible--his right-hand man in Fiume, fellow Italian aviator Guido Keller, was bisexual.
