Made in 1948, "Land of Fair Dinkum" is a travelogue about Australia that had it's title -- which was not in common use among Australians -- criticized by the Australian Consul-General when initially released. Paramount Pictures' Paul White defended the title, saying that several Australians had recommended it to him. The film was one of a series entitled "Our Changing World" made for distribution to educational institutions. The film shows New
South Wales with its surfing, racing, wood chopping, shearing and the flying doctor service.
This is a story written by air about the land of Australia. It is about a matter of hours here to reach Sydney, the capital city of Australia as seen at mark 0:55. It is the 17th largest city in our changing world. Australia as large as that of the United states has a population about that of New York city as seen at mark 1:00. One out of every Australians lives in Sydney as seen at mark 1:03. They are different kinds of people easy and democratic like America and are generation closer to their pioneering ancestors. They have strong feeling about cooperation. Their pet slang expression for power is seen at mark 1:20. They are fair dinkum of people, fair dinkum meaning something that is okay as seen at mark 1:30. And that’s how you’ll find them, a fair dinkum of people whose hard work as built a fair dinkum of land. They are quick to adopt the latest American ideas in transportation, business, and industries as seen at mark 1:50. At mark 2:00 is a busy port. Most homes are situated within easy reach of the beautiful harbor with its many fine beaches as seen at mark 2:00. Ice cream cones are popular as seen at mark 2:28. At mark 2:30, sportsmanship and natural competition is seen which is a national characteristics. Life saving patrols first originated on the Australian beaches as seen at mark 2:45. At mark 3:00 is the parade against athletes; water carnival which takes place between teams. Ruling for ones favorite team is called barraging as seen at mark 3:12. This is one place you are expected to put your all in or you go down instead of just downhill. At mark 3:45, the water jockeys are seen. Some go in, some go down and some go up as seen at mark 4:25.
More than half of the population live in the large coastal cities in town as seen at marks 4:35. A vast silence expands. At mark 4:55 is the outback an unbelievable stretch of 2million sq miles. It grows just enough vegetation to feed the sheep as seen at mark 5:00. At mark 5:10, the farmer is pulling out wools from his animals in which he gets billion pounds of wools form the animals each year. At mark 5:20 is a traveler visit to the lone ranches. You can fly thousands of straight miles through the outback without seeing a single house as seen at mark 5:40. Today we have pioneer outpost as seen at mark 5:55 in a town named broken hill which earlier settler developed. Mining, agriculture and cattle are also seen at mark 6:00. At mark 6:25 are horses of almost a million and a half of them. Nearly everyone in the outback are experts for horse sport as seen at mark 6:30. It’s a Saturday at mark 6:40 and a race track which is the order of the day. At mark 6:50, the race is seen with commentators commenting. At mark7:30 is the Australian famous laughing man in a fair. Families from all four corners of the nation come here to see what’s going on in their country as seen at mark 7:36. From Mulabula to Wagawaga they come to learn about latest ideas. At mark 8:00 is their chop competition. The winner is seen at mark 8:15. These are sport loving people, industrials. At mark 8:28 is their flying doctor base station who they call in term of needs. They walk with confidence through the street and aren’t afraid in our changing world.
We encourage viewers to add comments and, especially, to provide additional information about our videos by adding a comment! See something interesting? Immigration made Australia what it is today. In actual fact - the convicts were the first 'immigrants'. Most western countries and former 'Empire' countries were founded on immigration - including the US. Do I detect a touch of racism here? From a Kiwi who spent 30 years in Oz.

@@jacintabyline Pioneers are different to migrants. And calling convicts migrants? Too funny. You could detect racism in anything no doubt! But the fact remains, if it’s multiculty it is BY DEFINITION not Australia.

'fair dinkum' is an Aussie term dating back to the 1890's and common from WWI onwards, meaning genuine, honest, true.

The racetrack is Randwick in Sydney and the "track announcer" is Lachie Melville. He called Sydney races at the track and for the Australian Broadcasting Commission from 1933 until his retirement in 1957. During World War 2 some soldiers in the Australian Infantry Forces stationed in New Guinea wrote a poem and sent it to him. The soldiers used to listen to his calls of Saturday Sydney races and it was Lauchie's calling that reminded them more of home than anything else. So thrilled was he on receiving the poem that he had it framed and it held pride of place in the living room of his Sydney home. This is the ONLY audio I have ever heard of his calling. Many regarded him as Australia's best.

As with the US, those were our best years, as a Nation with pride. Now we are a characterless, divided multicultural mess. To call yourself Australian now, is seen as derogatory as our Government strives to destroy our once proud heritage.

@@jaynemeulman8484 No, the user above is correct. Australia the country we know was created by the British people. I write that without a drop of hostility towards first nations people, it's simply the truth. This idea that people are pushing recently that there is continuity between the two groups has no basis in reality. Again I don't hate first nations people, I respect their culture and identity enough to not patronise them by pretending they are something they are not.
