1940s Fisher Anvil Restoration - Making an Anvil Stand.
I restored "1940s Fisher-Norris anvil and making an anvil stand in the video. "Made in U.S.A." Fisher-Norris was the first large scale manufacturer of anvils in the U.S, found in 1843. They used a patent process that welded a tool steel plate onto a cast iron body in the mold when the anvil was cast. Up until this time all good anvils were forged from wrought iron and faced with tool steel that was forge welded to the body.The Fisher process produced an economical and very servicable anvil. They are also much quieter than wrought or all steel anvils which ring like a bell. Fisher-Norris anvils are often called “City Men’s anvil” because they don’t ring. This 100 lbs example was probably made in WW2 era, it doesn’t have the Eagle logo, Fisher stampings or the weight numbers on it. Please read to the end or you may misunderstand me. As a Blacksmith, I kept thinking that “ you are making it too pretty to use. Who would ever want to ding that anvil up by actually using it as it was intended. It seemed like a waste of good steel.” But…….as a Craftsman, this project makes my heart swell with appreciation for the skill and effort put into it. It is very pretty and I will just accept it as an object of beauty rather than a tool of industry. Well done, Sir, well done.

Here’s a tip for ya. After you take metal parts out of rust remover solution, wipe them down with WD40. It will keep the metal from flash rusting. Great work!

I use olive oil because its less toxic if one has to heat the parts.

His paint won't stick to a surface sprayed with WD40. Better tip. After using the rust remover put it in water with some baking soda. It will neutralize the effects of the acid used to remove the rust. Old Trappers tip I learned for dying brand new traps.

Almost perfect, the only thing I don't like is that you didn't weld the metal plates around the wood, it's supposed to be welded so is it stops the wood from splitting

Also known as Eagle Anvil Works, Fisher & Norris was established in 1843 and manufactured vises from the beginning. Their vise types were bench, bench and pipe, machinist, railway, swivel, toolmakers, woodworking, and combination vise and anvil. The company operated until 1979. Fisher & Norris had the distinction of being led by a woman, Harriet Fisher, after the death of her husband, Captain Clark Fisher, in 1902. Dubbed the "Anvil Queen," Mrs. Fisher was the subject of numerous newspaper stories through the late 1920s. GREAT JOB!

There's a guy in Freehold NJ who has put together a museum of (mostly) F&N anvils, tools, and other products. Supposedly he got into the building just before they tore them down and salvaged all kinds of stuff.

Really beautiful work. I wish any of my anvils looked this nice. Two small critiques, however. First, the feet you put on the stand, I'm not sure how well those would hold up to the repeated pounding if this anvil was put back in service. And second, the steel bands you added at the top and bottom of the stand make nice decorations, but won't add much to stabilize the wood unless you weld the corners together.

Feet holding up wouldn’t be the biggest concern the biggest concern with the feet is that contact points are to small and anvil would ring and have bad rebound

@@MrMagicBlox Even if they were welded, they aren't exerting any compression on the wood, so they wouldn't do much to prevent splitting. They would need to be welded at 3 corners, then flanges welded to the fourth with a gap between. Then a nut and bolt pulling the flanges together would provide the compression.

Yep! Very, very pretty! But from blacksmithing point of view many aspects are pointless 😁 most important thing - the anvil edges should be rounded. Otherwise the coldshuts will be created while forging at the face edge. Still very pleasant to watch and I had nice time watching the video!

Tip for you with the liquid bluing. Get the metal hot first with a heat gun or torch and blue it like 3x. Finish it off by applying a light coat of motor oil to the blued surface when done. It will come out looking like a hot blued gun barrel.

Hi, I just ran across this, that's a fine job you did on that restoration. I found a similar one, 150, about 15 years ago, and have been using it since. I was at this blacksmithing master-class and the blacksmith told us that first thing you do after you get yourself an anvil is to take an angle grinder and grind off that spitz of the horn, because it's a matter of time until you stab your thigh by it. Good advice, I'd imagine it would be an unforgettable experience :)

Nice job, love the stand. Only a couple nitpick complaints or critique would be the edges of the anvil face need to be rounded or "broken" slightly. The smith using the anvil normally does this to his/her preference though so it's not a big deal as new anvils come with sharp corners or barely chamfered corners. The only other possible complaint is the banding doesn't look like it's been welded into a solid piece? Would be much stronger if if welded and then bolted to the stump. Minor complaints, really nice job.

Congratulations on finding and restoring such a lovely anvil and finding such a nice block to mill and mount it on. It looked beautiful and loved the attention to detail. There's only a couple of things I might have changed, as others have mentioned. Welding the metal bands to hold the block together for centuries and leaving off or taking off the adjustable legs so as to distribute the force evenly to the floor, rather than those four small points. It's what the big block it designed to do. I'm sure you'd manage that with the same care :) Beautiful craftsmanship otherwise and a pleasure to watch. I watch too many that don't pay attention to the little details like you and a few others do. Kindest regards and thanks for the upload.

The metal bands around the stump are suposed to prevent splitting of the stump, but the way you made them won't help. I also think those tiny feet won't last long, if you would use it. In this project you spent a lot of work in unnecessary details, but you didn't care about fuktionality.

The metal bands can easily be welded together to fix that problem, the paint has rust inhibiting properties, and although I agree that the feet won’t serve well, I guess it’s a good thing that he made them removable and therefore replaceable. Right? So maybe he was looking ahead for possible other solutions but could only work with what he had available to him at the time? Or maybe he will realize that he needs to adapt to his problems when they appear and fortunately arranged things so that that process will be easier? That’s what I see. If you’re going to look down at people like that, try being a productive and constructive critic who offers answers for your stated problems rather than just someone who picks at things. Both of you. I’m just saying…

Very nice. I would certainly love to have it in my shop. The only thing I would have done different is to spot weld the bar straps together at all the corners to add true encasing support to the wood pedestal, preventing it from potentially splitting in the future and possible pulling apart. The corners could have been ground down to match the angle and finished in the same manner.

It has been sometime since I have studied anvil restoration. I believe in order to keep the bounce and tension it should be heated to 450 before welding with specific rods. Cool down period is important as well. We Just an fyi for anyone who has to do build up on a nice old anvil. Probably not necessary for this job. Thanks for the vid. It has been 25 years since I restored my Peter Wright.

I think the green eyed monster has appeared in a couple of the comments, but it frequently appears in your restorations. Why people feel they have to find some hypothetical criticism just to make themselves feel better is beyond me. As always you’ve done an amazing job, far beyond anything I could dream of doing. Please may I ask why did you blue the base and straps instead of painting them? Even in its original state under a $1 a pound is a bargain.

Bluing gives that "vintage look" (for the stripes).

Mark, I've never seen any of this youtuber's restorations before, only this one, and it's got nothing to do with hypotheticals or 'the green eyed monster' There was a lot wrong with this project, and a lot of instances where this was prepared to be a decoration but not a workable tool. The metal thread inserts used in a wood substrate, the fake metal straps around the base, the little threaded feet underneath, etc etc. As a person who's has a 35 year career in metalworking, I understand how the garage-warrior crowd would be googley-eyed over this. The finished product was objectively very pretty and if you don't know any better this looks like a really fantastic restoration. But if you post something like this to the general public, people who do know better will see it as well and voice their more qualified opinions. I wouldn't want a some young person with a limited budget who wants to get into blacksmithing, look at this and emulate it for an anvil that they intend to actually use. The result would be terribly discouraging, and that's just not fair to them.

Forgot to mention. Those base bands look nice, but sure ain't gonna stop the basefrom splitting unless you weld the 4 corners of each.

Fantastic work and a high quality video as well. My great grandfather was a blacksmith and had a shop in the late 1800's and early 1900's in Idaho USA. I have a few photos from 1904 and there are three anvils of this size in his blacksmithing shop mounted on tree rounds. None are shaved nor banded, but very well used as far as I can tell from the photos.

You did such a nice job on the anvil, I can believe how you have buttered the block. Furniture legs??? What the hell were you thinking? The block needs to be stable and sturdy, you will hit that once with a sledgehammer and the leg will fly off. And what are those bars? A decorative piece? That is supposed to be welded in the corners so it creates a hoop and provides structural integrity against splitting. I had so much hope and you threw it in the gutter. Making this decorative anvil.
