My Uncle Bob is probably in some of these videos. He was a faller in the 30's and 40's, and talked a lot about felling some of these giants. He ax cut the back cuts so smooth that you put a level or protractor on it. Had a tree barber-chair during a final cut one time. As it was falling, it twisted and broke branches off and chased him around the stump like a pirouette! When he passed away many years later, he still had a broken chunk of redwood limb stuck under his collarbone when one of those branches speared him. Loved listening to his stories. I think they only ran the mill one 8 hour shift 4 days a week because of the growing scarcity of the trees they could harvest and I think it was the only redwood mill in the area. It was an amazing place. The California redwoods are one of the most amazing places on the planet to see and at least they have left enough to get a sense of what once was.

Social media is for insecure sheeple. If you're not one of them and you have the strength to be true to yourself then you'll rise above all of those unoriginal slugs. You clearly don't do woodworking or know anybody good at it still alive. I've got a wooden bowl that doesn't have a crack in it yet four generations deep. It wasn't uncommon in the old days for even a poor family to have properly made, sturdy wooden furniture that outlives the family name. Today it's unfortunately mostly wealthy customers who can commission good work, but anyone can learn the species of trees, how to fell them, how to dry them and how to carve them with modern tools or how to split and carve them. What you're describing is shit from modern stores.

Maybe you should go out, show some responsibility & PLANT SOME NEW TREES? You have WOOD in your HOUSE, your FURNITURE, your GUITAR, etc. How do you think these items were produced? ... yes ... TREES were CUT DOWN. All living things eventually die ... great that the trees didn't simply rot and go to waste like much of the forest, but rather were used to produce something useful to you and many others. I am certainly in favour of protecting a certain percentage of these magnificent trees to be able to admire and appreciate, all while planting new ones to support a SUSTAINABLE FUTURE.

Going back to my original post ... which suggested a reasonable BALANCE between preserving ALL trees (i.e. NO cutting), vs cutting SOME trees to sustain everyone's way of life (a very middle-of-the-road position ... as all of our houses are no doubt constructed using much wood). Also this video depicted a much earlier time in history when houses were constructed using even more wood than they do now. Much has changed regarding sustainable forestry since this film was shot. So if forestry companies always PLANT more new trees than they cut ... So far, you have contributed nothing towards either side of this discussion?

Ask the average American where Vietnam (for example) is on a map and watch them struggle. Ask a European and we'll show you. Most Americans have no idea what happens out of their own country. There is a Hotel on the coast in Northern California. This hotel was made entirely of one redwood tree with Lumber left over . I read a book a few years ago about the construction of this hotel and it was amazing. Plus many many pictures of the ongoing building. Very cool. I don't remember the name of the book but I think the hotel was called the Redwood Hotel or something on that order. Take care. T Edit . I just looked up the name it's the Curly Redwood Lodge in Crescent City California. On their website you can click on to the history of the lodge.

Jamon Toast I agree whole heartedly, it’s all we can do in this world. Some people are just meant to be in the past. Society was different and it was a lot easier to get a job, buy a house and socialize with others. Rock and roll was taboo, leather jackets were for hoodlums, girls never wore pants, kids payed attention to their cars and racing cars was dangerous! My grandma was apart of a club who set up balls and dances and my both my grandfathers were greasers who payed more attention to their rides than school. Now what do our kids do? We listen to horrible rap music and smoke weed all day. Shewwwww where’s my time machine?

I'm a carpenter and redwood you can hardly find anymore , as far as building "20 houses" out of 1 tree , maybe back then but redwood has great qualities against insects , but being strong enough structurly to build a house is not one of them . It's even getting hard to get dougfir now and has been for awhile , so my question is if these species are being re-planted , will they be back on the market, say , in the next 500 years?

The first man in this video is my Grandfather he was a foreman for The Carson Lumber Co. and lived at Falk Ca. where my Grandmother was the camp cook and school teacher for the camp childern. The river is the Eel river and the mill is at Scotia Ca once the largest lumber mill in the world. I am proud of my family and I became a conservationist working to restore the small creeks and rivers and restore salmon habitat.
